Photo and Graphics Designer 9

Published in Software on 16 Jul 2013
Now part of the MAGIX family, Xara’s flagship graphics photo and designer product has reached version 9.
I first came across Xara when the company so impressed Corel, with the rate at which its software handled tasks that tended to be time consuming when run on CorelDRAW, that the Canadian Graphics company licensed the UK software to release under its own banner.  Ever since this event, which took place at an early Windows show, Xara has continued to emphasise the speed aspect of its graphics software over numerous releases.

The Blacksmith’s Daughter

Published in Entertainment on 13 Jul 2013
One-eyed stone heads, a town that is only visible for a short period every 300 years and a missing boyfriend are all present in this next game.
The Cyclops was not, as we have been led to believe, a one-off monstrosity found in Greek mythology.  The Cyclops was, in fact, a race of visually restricted beings that were based in a town located not too far from Skye.  In case you are wondering why this fact is not common knowledge then I should explain that this Cyclopean town was, and is, in the grip of a magical force which caused the town to be visible only for a short period every 300 years.

A Philips 23-inch Monitor

Published in Homes and Gardens on 11 Jul 2013
Monitors are increasingly becoming multifunction devices as can be seen with a Philips model with a built-in USB 3.0 Hub.
If memory serves me correct, which does happen occasionally, my first dedicated monitor had a single connection on the rear.  Not only did this single input provide the conduit between the display and computer for the video signal but also the power needed to drive the monitor.  Now computer displays have started to spout various physical connections to offer users a choice of facilities.

eBook Reader or Tablet?

Published in Misc on 9 Jul 2013
Tablets have been able to offer users the ability to act as an eBook Reader for quite a while now. You just need to download the appropriate free app and your tablet can transform itself into a Kindle, Kobo or Nook in the blink of an eye. Now, with the arrival of products such as the Nook HD+, we are beginning to see a turn of the tide as devices, whose primary function is that of an eBook Reader, appear with tablet-like capabilities to enhance their appeal to the discerning user fraternity.

A Digital Adaptation

Published in Entertainment on 6 Jul 2013
As it approaches its one hundred year anniversary, John Buchan’s classic tale of murder and spies makes its appearance on the Windows PC platform.
First published in 1915, John Buchan’s classic adventure spy novel, entitled The 39 Steps, has appeared in a variety of guises including print, of course, cinema, theatre and television.  Now a further format is added as this tale of skulduggery and a German invasion plot makes the transition to the PC platform.  Classified as a digital adaptation, the PC version of The 39 Steps is available on Avanquest’s GSP label.

Driving Assistance

Published in Misc on 4 Jul 2013
With the functionality now available from various devices such as smartphones and tablets, the manufacturers of SatNav products face an increasing challenge to persuade would-be purchasers to loosen their purse strings. Why should customers spend their hard-earned disposal income on a new SatNav product when they already possess the tools that are capable of providing basic navigational information through the use of GPS and mapping apps? Garmin’s solution to this conundrum is to bundle free lifetime services with its new SatNav line up of models.
The latest Garmin product line up consists of its nüvi SatNav devices categorised as Essential, Advanced and Premium models.  This review is based on the Advanced range of which there are three distinct models.  My review sample is the 5-inch version rather than the 4.3-inch or 7-inch units.

The Psychic Detective

Published in Entertainment on 3 Jul 2013
Time to enter into the spirit (no pun intended) of the game as you attempt to solve murders committed in two different locations and time periods.
Angelica Weaver is a detective on Chicago’s Special Task Force.  This detective has the dual ability of being able to communicate with dead spirits and use super-sensory visions to jump back and forth between crimes committed in a historical London and present-day Chicago.  Known as the Psychic Detective, Angelica Weaver sets out to solve the mystery of a murderer who taunts the Special Task Force with the message of “Catch me when you can” in this next game.

A Colour Laser Printer

Published in Printers/Scanners on 2 Jul 2013
Normally when I get to see a colour printer, it is an inkjet model but in this case the printer is a laser unit.
Decked out in a rather subdued combination of light and dark grey, the HL-3140CW is a Brother laser printer.  Unlike my own Brother HL-2030, which has provided sterling service for several years, this new Brother unit features two major differences which are indicated by the “CW” part of the unit’s model number.  The HL-3140CW supports wireless connectivity and is a colour laser printer.

Simple ideas are often the best especially when the solution can be applied to different problems.
I recently came across a company called Mobio at an IT event.  This company has launched itself with the strap line of “The smart way to use mobile devices”.  With its headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, this American company has set itself the task of developing innovative, high-quality products that have been designed to enhance the use of mobile devices.

When was the last time you discovered your mobile device was power deficient when you needed it in an emergency?
For many of us, it is apparent that our reliance on mobile devices is paramount.  It seems we can not leave home without the comfort and support that is offered by a range of products whether they are basic handsets, tablets, music players or the all-encompassing promise that smartphones deliver.  Even when we are safely ensconced in our dwelling space these devices often take the lead with our communication and entertainment needs.

Published in Entertainment on 25 June 2013
Up until recently I was of the firm opinion that the living room in my home was of a reasonable size. Now, however, I am not so sure. The arrival of a product from Samsung has put a different perspective on how I regard my personal living space.
You have probably seen the advert and, maybe as I did, wonder just what the heck was going on until the punch-line was finally delivered.  You know the advert I mean.  It is the one where hordes of people, dressed in all manner of costumes from throughout history, along with animals and vehicles, charge along a beach causing mayhem as they descend on a solitary person sitting comfortably in an armchair.

Without wanting to sound sexist, Gigabyte’s decision to use attractive female presenters for its latest product tour certainly appealed to yours truly
Let me start this review with a question.  What type of device would you expect if it was called “Fly”?  Maybe you would consider that it might be connected to aeronautics in some way or perhaps entomology might be a more logical theme.  In either case this would be an incorrect choice.  I just wonder how many of you would be on the same wave length as Gigabyte, the company responsible for naming the subject of this next review.

Having destroyed the alien invaders or rescued hostages being held captive by terrorists, you might want to share your achievements with others. This next title offers to help you record your success for posterity.
While the “Prt Scr” key on your computer keyboard can capture the content of certain screens, it is not omnipotent.  There are some types of content that this method fails to capture because it is beyond its scope.  Two notable examples are those involving the capture of video content and many game playing action scenes.  Pressing the “Prt Scr” during these types of scenario generally just product a blank screen which is hardly what you want.

Published in Entertainment on 19 June 2013

Forty years ago the place to go to for your entertainment was the Nightingale Theatre.  But then this popular establishment was ravaged by a yet fully explained fire.  No one knows for sure who started the fire but a prime candidate was your grandfather who was the owner of the building.  His disappearance just after the fire helped feed the rumours that he was responsible for starting the blaze.

As technology advances, so older formats tend to go unsupported. However sometimes help is available to convert the older formats into one that can be used on modern equipment.
Over the years, of which there have been many, I have built up a collection of LPs featuring some of my favourite recording artists.  Some of the LPs were purchased as new while the more recent additions were found as a result of visits to local boot sales.  Despite my best efforts, even with the new products, these LPs are showing signs of their age in both appearance and the audio performance that is delivered from these treasured possessions.

Published in Entertainment on 15 June 2013
As technology advances, data stored on legacy devices needs to be transferred to the latest format to ensure the content continues to be readily available.
You may remember that the last Honestech product that I reviewed was entitled Audio Recorder 3.0 Plus.  This product’s aim was to help you transfer and convert audio content from analogue format stored on cassette tape to digital audio on your computer for later transfer to optical media.  Now the company has released a product which performs a similar task but this time aimed more at video content that is stored on VHS media and various devices. Entitled VHStoDVD 7.

Witches never seem to rate highly on most people's popularity lists. Part of this unloved quality could be down to the actions of the Snow Queen, a central character in this next game.
Originally published by Big Fish Games, Dark Parables Rise of the Snow Queen is now available from Focus Multimedia in Collector's Edition format.  As is usual in such cases, the bonus items making up this title, apart from the Strategy Guide, only become available once the main game has been completed.

A Boxee Box

Published in Entertainment on 11 June 2013
The Boxee Box could be regarded as a hybrid product. D-Link, the source of this particular offering, has combined the free Boxee media software with its own hardware kit in order to offer the user a solution to the conundrum of creating a home-based media centre for their entertainment needs.
Recently I have been checking out the Boxee Box as part of my home network computer set up.  The results were not always as positive as I would have liked as the Boxee Box proved to have a temperamental side to its make-up. Lets start with the actual kit before getting down to the performance.

Published in Entertainment on 5 June 2013
Asked to list the top ten world influencing events of the past 50 years, I am sure many, if not all, would include the event that happened on the 22nd November 1963.
It was one of those events that are indelibly etched on the memory of those of us who were alive at the time.  My less-than-perfect recollection of this event places me at a Friday evening social Badminton event.  The social aspect of this burning off of excessive energy (I was a good deal younger then) can be judged by the players’ habit of listening to radio broadcasts, such as “The Navy Lark” as they played.

Never having eaten an oyster, I am unsure whether this delicacy would suit a side dish of damsons but why talk of food when technology is available.
It wasn’t so long ago that I had the opportunity to look at my first product from Damson.  This was a portable Bluetooth audio streaming device that was entitled Twist.  This model made use of Incisor diffusion technology to deliver its audio output.  Now it is the turn of one of Damson’s other product, namely the Oyster, which makes use of Wave Field Synthesis 3D sound technology.

Available from Focus Multimedia's extensive catalogue of titles, Strange Cases The Secrets of Grey Mist Lake is a Hidden Object Adventure game.  With this Collector's Edition version, you get a number of bonus items.  As is the usual practice, items such as a bonus chapter, concept art, wallpaper and music soundtrack only become available when the main game has been completed.

As you might suppose the evil sorcerer is the Kaschey of the game’s title and he is in the market for a wife.
This game opens as Kaschey, using his magical powers, kidnaps and spirits away the royal Tsarita.  Her eldest son sets out to rescue his mother but he disappears as well.  The second son then sets out on the same task but a similar fate befalls him.  Now it is the turn of the third and youngest son to ease his father’s unhappiness and rescue the queen and his mother.  This is your role in the game.

A Predator Speaker System

Published in Entertainment on 25 May 2013
Often it is easy to recognise an Edifier speaker system just by looking at its usual design concept.
I know I am guilty of repeating myself but it has to be said that the company Edifier has never been constrained by the usual conventions when it comes to the design and shape of its various speaker systems.  In the past I have set up and checked out Edifier systems that have been based on a cylindrical, spherical, decapitated pyramid and the large one-eyed monopod unit shape.  Now with the latest 2.
