WinZip 18 with Add-ons

Published in Software on 19 Dec 2013
A long time resident on my various hard disks over the years has been different versions of WinZip. The latest version of this software now supports add-ons.
Do you remember when local storage capacity was at a premium?  I am referring to a time when hard disks often gave users a capacity of under 100MB (that’s megabytes not gigabytes) and prices were in the vicinity of £200 or thereabouts.  The promise of terabytes, cloud storage and transferring data via the Internet were features not even on the horizon during my initial steps in the world of computing.

The Shivah Returns

Published in Entertainment on 18 Dec 2013
Many modern games strive to be as realistic in the appearance of graphics as possible but some of us can remember when things were different.
Back in 2006, a New York City based indie game developer, named Wadjet Eye Games, offered, as its commercial debut, a point-and-click adventure game.  This was The Shivah, a game that was set mainly in a New York City synagogue that had fallen on hard times with a reduced congregation.  Now, some seven years later, Wadjet Eye Games feels the gaming community is ready to face up to the challenge of a remastered version of the game as it is rereleased on the PC and iOS platforms.

736751 alawar Call of Ages Collectors Editio

Call of Ages

Published in Entertainment on 14 Dec 2013
Call of Ages is a new game developed by Playrix and available from Alawar in Collector’s Edition format. This is a match-3 game that has a certain resemblance to some of the earlier titles developed by Playrix but does add one or two extra features to freshen up the concept. Along with the main game you get access to various wallpapers and the music soundtrack which are stored in separate folders plus a number of bonus levels.
The story line behind Call of Ages is told by an initial video sequence complete with a clearly spoken narration.  According to this narration, the Calendar of Ages, which is vital to the protection and stability of the world, has been destroyed.  This damage has to be repaired to stop the world from slipping into a state of chaos.  You are cast in the role of the world’s saviour as you need to track down eight artefacts.
734001 Samsung M2875FD Xpress Mono Laser Multifunction Printe

A Multifunction Laser

Published in Printers/Scanners on 12 Dec 2013
While colour can add visual impact, it does add to the cost and is not always necessary for certain documents. In such cases a monochrome laser might be the better option.
The Samsung Multifunction Xpress is a monochrome laser unit.  As the multifunction part of its title might indicate, this product is capable of delivering print, copy, scan and fax functionality with ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) thrown in for good measure.  Connectivity gives you a choice of USB or wireless depending upon your needs. You could hardly describe this unit as being compact as its dimensions of 401 x 362 x 367mm (W x D x H) will testify.
It all started with a Family Secret. Later the Palm of Zoroaster took the focus of attention. Now we have the third instalment of House of 1000 Doors entitled Serpent Flame. Originally published by Alawar, House of 1000 Doors Serpent Flame, a Hidden Object Adventure game, is available in Collector’s Edition format from Focus Multimedia.
As usual with Collector’s Edition titles, a number of bonus items are provided along with the main game of Serpent Flame.  Some of the bonus items are available straight away, such as the integrated Strategy Guide plus various wallpapers and concept art, while others, as in the case of cut scenes, mini games and puzzles, can only be access once they have been tackled in the game.  There is also a bonus chapter that can be access once the main game has been completed.

Roku 3 Media Streaming

Published in Entertainment on 10 Dec 2013
On a recent visit to a UK preview of an American Consumer Electronics Show, I was introduced to a product designed to stream content from various sources. This product is Roku 3.
Offering to act as a media centre device, streaming content from different sources, is the designated aim of the Roku 3.  This product is rather small, measuring just 27 x 80 x 80mm (H x W x D), and is predominately lacquered black in colour with a matte silver logo on the front face.  Included in the box is an enhanced remote control, in-ear headphones set, 2 x AA batteries, AC power adapter and a slim Getting Started booklet.

A Klear View

Published in Misc on 7 Dec 2013
A recent visit to a trade show introduced me to a company that was involved in the development of various products that might stop me moaning about the condition of some hardware items.
As regular readers will no doubt be well aware, one of my big bugbears is the increasing appearance of fingers smears defacing a range of devices.  What with manufacturers opting for lacquered black coatings and the headlong rush towards touch being the preferred method of control, then we could well be in for a bumper crops of finger smears decorating, not only on own devices but those that we check out in retail stores or various exhibitions set up to promote such devices.
733997 Velodyne vFree On Ear Bluetooth Headphone

Bluetooth Headphones

Published in Entertainment on 5 Dec 2013
With the title of vFree you might wonder just what this next product could be. In fact it is a set of headphones.
Perhaps I should start this review with a brief explanation regarding the title of this product as I see it.  The “v” part of vFree indicates the company responsible for the development and manufacture of this headphone product.  Founded in 1983 and based in California’s Silicon Valley, Velodyne Inc is a technology company with specific expertise in the field of high-performance audio equipment such as in-ear and over-ear products.
Not everybody likes snakes, myself included, and this next title has more than enough of this reptilian species for my taste
9 Clues: The Secret of Serpent Creek casts you in the role of a paranormal private investigator.  Following a rather worrying telephone call from your reporter friend, Helen Hunter, you set out to come to her aid at the coastal town of Serpent Creek.
731284 Orbotix Sphero 2.0 App Controlled Robotic Bal

A Robotic Ball

Published in Misc on 3 Dec 2013
At the moment I am in the doghouse – well not literally but my cat no longer considers me his best mate and is doing his best to ignore me. The reason for this unfortunate state of affairs is the arrival of the Sphero 2 from Orbotix. I have been testing this device much to the cat’s disgust and annoyance as he can not understand what it is or why it does the things it does.
For those not familiar with the Sphero, either in its original incarnation or this latest version, I should explain that this cat-annoying piece of kit is a robotic ball.  It can perform a range of activities under the control of a number of apps developed for the iOS and Android platforms.  I almost wrote “under my control” but, as yet, that description would fall somewhat short of the truth but I am improving if only rather slowly at making it do what I want.

TuneUp Utilities 2014

Published in Software on 30 Nov 2013
While “familiarity breeds contempt” might not totally be the appropriate comment, in some respect it could apply in this situation. After all the more we use our Windows computers, the less responsive they become when reacting to our needs and commands. Often we are kept waiting for a boot-up sequence to be completed and programs, which previously loaded speedily, now appear to crawl as if they are spending time admiring the innards of the computer and its operating system. Of course we could just sit back, twiddling our thumbs or contemplating our navels, while time ticks away or we could attempt to tackle the problem at source with software designed for the purpose. One such product that I have used over a number of years is TuneUp Utilities which is now available in its new 2014 version.
When installing TuneUp Utilities you will need to enter a 35-character product key. A search will be conducted for an earlier version of the software and if one is found then it will be removed.  Options will be made available to include TuneUp Shredder and TuneUp Disk Space Explorer as part of the installation plus adding TuneUp Undelete facility to the Recycle Bin Context (following a right mouse click) menu.

Stopmotion Studio 4.0

Published in Software on 28 Nov 2013
A flip book was the method use to create moving images when I was a child. Now modern technology can be used to create a similar effect.
Described as an Edutainment product, Stopmotion Studio 4.0 is a tool designed for the creating of stop-motion videos as you capture a stream of images posed slightly differently.  Released by Honestech, this product is being marketed as a fun educational software offering for the creation of movies for school projects.  Naturally the budding movie maker will need to provide their own capture device which could be a webcam, camcorder or DSLR camera.
731282 Haunted Hotel Charles Dexter Ward Childhood Collectors Editio

A Hotel with Vacancies

Published in Entertainment on 27 Nov 2013
Hotels appearing in games tend to be portrayed as establishments where you would not want to spend too much time. The hotel’s reputation is often sullied with tales of misadventure, missing residents, wandering spirits of which many are evil, and even the occasional murder. Take the Haunted Hotel featured in this next game for instance.
Subtitled Charles Dexter Ward and available in Collector’s Edition format from Focus Multimedia, this Haunted Hotel Hidden Object Adventure game sets you the task of finding the aforementioned Charles Dexter Ward who happens to be your brother who has mysteriously gone missing.  While the police and press believe Charles has just left town but you known differently as your brother always kept you informed as to his whereabouts.

The Cloud on your Desktop

Published in Mobile Tech on 26 Nov 2013
Western Digital, or WD as it is referred to by friends and family, is best known for its hard disk products in various formats. It is therefore not surprising that the company’s next product is based on one of its hard drives. Basically this is a method of providing the user with Cloud-like services while retaining full control over their content from their local base.
This Western Digital NAS solution, appropriately entitled My Cloud, is currently available in 2 and 3TB versions with a 4TB product due in the near future.  Along with its local and network capabilities, the My Cloud offers Cloud-like access to remote devices via free downloadable apps for the iOS and Android platforms but more on this aspect a little later. Always Up-to-Date Norton

Published in Software on 23 Nov 2013
As part of its family of protection software, Norton has released the latest version of its popular Norton Internet Security product.
I am sure whether to claim that this next product is the latest version or not.  Having checked the product box carefully, I could find no indication that the version of Norton Internet Security was, in fact, the 2014 offering.  However the box does clearly state that this product is always up-to-date as it automatically updates to the latest version so presumably Symantec feels there is no need to add a version identifier to the product’s title.

An Old, Old Favourite

Published in Software on 21 Nov 2013
In its various versions, Paint Shop Pro has been a regular resident on my computer systems dating back to its Shareware days. This product is now a popular member of the Corel family.
Back in 1991, Robert Volt, a qualified pilot and software engineer, developed a graphics program entitled Paint Shop Pro.  This software, which originally could easily fit on a 5.25-inch floppy disk with space to spare, has grown in size and increased in functionality so that the latest version comes on a DVD.  This is Paint Shop Pro X6 which is available in Standard and Ultimate versions.

Premiere Elements 12

Published in Software on 19 Nov 2013
Like Adobe Photoshop Elements 12, Adobe Premiere Elements 12 is a less powerful and more economic version of one of Adobe’s marketing leading products used by many professional users. So if you feel that Adobe Premiere video editing software is too expensive for your current financial situation then you might like to consider Adobe Premiere Elements 12 which could well be within your budget range.
As with its companion product, namely , Premiere Elements 12 opens with a flash screen providing access to Organizer and Video Editor Modules plus various video tutorials covering a range of topics found within this product.  The Organizer module has a rather neutral style of interface which consists of various shades of grey.  This module shares its underlying database with that used by Photoshop Elements 12 and will access its data if it is available.

Photoshop Elements 12

Published in Software on 16 Nov 2013
While the tool of choice for many professionals working with digital images is Adobe Photoshop, the pricing of this product puts it out of the reach of mere mortals. Fortunately Adobe, being aware of the financial restraints many of us have to work under and still wishing to draw more customers into its family, has developed a more economic but less powerful offering. This is Photoshop Elements which is now up to version 12 and is available in either Windows or Mac flavours.
Continuing the approach adopted with the pervious version of this product, Photoshop Elements 12 opens with a flash screen that gives you the option of accessing modules entitled Organizer and Photo Editor.  This flash screen also provides the user will a number of video tutorials regarding some of the different features of this latest version of the software.  Apart from having to put up with an American accent, this is a nice feature and worth checking out.

It is your responsibility to make sure your data is kept safe. A scheduled back-up process can help in this respect.
Many years ago, when hard disk capacities were much smaller and software tended to arrive on 5.25 or 3.5-inch floppy disks, I would regularly spend an afternoon feeding this type of media into a drive as I backed up my computer system.  Those days are now happily just a distant memory as the backup process has advanced to the stage where you merely need to schedule a job and then forget about it as the software takes the strain.

A Samsung Monitor

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 12 Nov 2013
The Samsung S27C750P is a 27-inch LED Monitor that forms part of the company’s Series 7 family of products. This particular model is of the type that can be viewed in either landscape or portrait orientation depending upon your needs.
Unpacking the Samsung S27C750P revealed two separate units consists of a rectangular metallic silver base stand and the display unit with a permanently attached support pole.  Both units are reassuringly weighty giving a solid appearance to the product.  Connecting the display to the stand base is straightforward as you slot the two items together and tighten a single screw.

Norton All-Round Protection

Published in Software on 9 Nov 2013
received an email recently which reminded me that there was a task that required my immediate attention. This email informed me that my Norton 360 subscription had expired and I was no longer protected. This wake up call was just the impetus I needed to make sure the next product under review would be the latest version of Norton 360 which provides antivirus and Internet protection for up to three devices.

A Freesat HD Box

Published in Homes and Gardens on 7 Nov 2013
Freesat HD is a subscription free service giving access to a range of television and radio channels with some addition features. To gain access to this service you do require to have an installed satellite dish and a set-top box such as the Humax HB-1000S which is the subject of this review.
The Humax HB-1000S box is rather nondescript in appearance.  Compact in size with dimensions of 200 x 155 x 30 mm (W x D x H), the metal box is well perforated with punch holes on the top and slots along the sides and base of the unit.  An on/off button and infra-red sensor are accompanied by logos for Humax and Freesat HD on the front panel.  Four small feet on the base of the unit raise it above the surface to aid w the free flow of cooling air.

A Return to Experiment

Published in Entertainment on 6 Nov 2013
This next title mixes match-3 game play action with a storyline based on royal princes looking to take over their father’s kingdom.
As it title indicates, Experiment 2 is the follow up to Experiment.  Unfortunately I seemed to have missed out on the first offering but I have been informed that with this latest game you again need to come to the aid of Sophie and Adam as they attempt to thwart a plan being hatched that could cause the four kingdoms of Ice, Air, Earth and Fire to plunge into darkness.

Edifier Bric Connect

Published in Entertainment on 5 Nov 2013
Although our various mobile devices can play music, they often need help to produce quality audio. This next product offers to help.
I have always looked forward to the arrival of a new speaker system from Edifier as the company’s design department generally comes up with a shape that is a little out of the ordinary and brings a smile to my face (not a pleasant sight but one that I am stuck with as I do not fancy plastic surgery).  However on this occasion, with the arrival of the Edifier Bric Connect, my first glance at this new product was tinged with a little disappointment.

Need a Massage

Published in Misc on 2 Nov 2013
The title “Gel Shiatsu 2 in 1 Back and Shoulder Massager with Technogel” is certainly a mouthful. It is also not one that you would expect to come across every day or act as the title of a product being reviewed on Gadgetspeak.com. Yet, unlikely as it may seem, this over-long title belongs to the next product on my review schedule.
As the title indicates, this product makes use of Shiatsu practices to help massager specific areas of your body.  If you are not too familiar with Shiatsu I should explain that in Japanese the word means "finger pressure".  Shiatsu is a type of alternative medicine that consists of finger and palm pressure, stretches, and other massaging techniques.

The Treasures of Montezuma 4

Published in Entertainment on 30 Oct 2013
You can not keep an n Emperor down for long especially when his name is Montezuma. As a result Alawar has announced the release of the latest episode of one of the company’s most popular franchises with the arrival of The Treasures of Montezuma 4. This time, however, the Emperor takes a back seat as the game is more to do with his beloved Anakaona.
This latest take on the Match 3 genre opens as Montezuma and Anakaona pledge their undying love for each other.  However the celebrations are quickly cut short by the appearance of the conquistadors led by Cortez.  The Aztec Gods come to the aid of the royal couple by opening a portal to another world so that they can escape from the clutches of the invaders.  Unfortunately Anakaona is shot before she can enter the portal and escape.
