pure tempus 1S_cherry DAB radi

Pure Tempus-1S

Published in Entertainment on 9 Jan 2008
Despite the traditional DAB shape this unit has a few surprises inside. The sound quality is excellent and it is extremely easy to use. In fact all in all it’s a very nice DAB radio.
Yes there was an earlier Tempus offering and it's shape and size very like others by Pure but certain features are new. It is 21x12x17cm. These are the maximum sizes the latter the height goes to the top of the snooze handle, the middle figure is from the front of the volume and tuning knobs to the rear of the power lead. My unit was in a light cherry (looking more like teak to me) wood. The right half of the front has a two line display 6x1.
goodmans boombox portable hif

Goodman’s Boom Box

Published in Entertainment on 7 Jan 2008
A competitively priced product in a field where most manufacturers have at least one entry. This one has CD, tape (I am told this is still requested), MP3, USB and FM/MW radio.
This looks very like those offerings of a few years ago that used to be humped around on the shoulders of youths. It is 34x22x13.5cm. The width (middle figure) is a little misleading as it narrows to only 13cm at each end. The weight is around 2.5kilos. The unit is grey with black mesh over the front. To play CD's you need not only the controls on the top of the unit but also the remote control as amazingly the unit itself does not have a play/pause button.

Binary Watches

Published in Misc on 6 Jan 2008
Are you fed up – like a friend of mine – of everyone peering at your wrist to get the time? Well wear any one of this range of watches from TokyoFlash Japan and they will probably be none the wiser. Could be an outlet for spare Christmas cash.
The first of the two watches I found easy to set and read, the second created more problems not least because the diagram did not look like the watch I was sent. 1259L LED Watch Firstly it is not light as it weights over 130grams. It comes complete with a chunky stainless steel strap. It has two columns of blue LED's. The left column has five LED's a space and then a further nine.

Samsung i70 Digital Camera

Published in Cameras on 4 Jan 2008
This is one of a range of cameras launched at the start of the year. I have investigated a couple from the ‘S’ range and one from the ‘L’ range. Here one from the ‘i’ range and shortly one from the other range the ‘NV’.
There are two items in this range 'aimed at the younger market' the i7 (slightly more expensive) and the one I have the i70. It is 8.5x6x2cm when closed. Slide the screen to the left (this adds 3cm to the 8.5cm length) as a simple way to turn it on or off. It weights close to 180grams so the silver grey colour is a metal. When closed only the flash is visible on the face. The right side has a door to cover the solid battery and SD card (no card supplied).

Canon Pixma MX300

Published in Printers/Scanners on 2 Jan 2008
This is described as an ‘Office All In One’ As it is black and grey it is unlikely to pass the ‘lounge police’ but apart from that it is not that tall and the output quality is good. It is actually a multi function unit as it has fax.
The dimensions of the Canon Pixma MX300 are 45x42x16cm however the height required will be increased to at least double the 16cm stated when you insert A4 paper (face forward) in the rear near vertical tray, this should also be sufficient to insert items onto the flat bed. However to fully raise the lid to vertical would require 30cm on top of the 16cm height of the unit.
This is a 22inch panel with standard analogue (15pin input) but it also has – not as you may think digital – but HDMI so your high definition Blu-ray or other device connect directly.
I must admit my initial thoughts were disappointment as the maximum display is 1680x1050 although the graphics card in the system will display a screen up to 2048x1536 and does if set but you scroll to the bits not shown on the 22inch display. First the dimensions it is 52x42x6.5cm when on it's circular 22cm base that raises the screen around 7cm above your desk. The actual viewing area is 47x29.5cm giving the 21.6 inch diagonal measurement.
The first a food item to fight the big two of Bovril and Marmite and the second a book to provide tasty recipes for Diabetics. Yes the link is tenuous but as I am a Diabetic and I like Toastmate it’s made.
Toastmate   I suspect most people will have at one time or other tried Bovril and or Marmite (it seems Paddington Bear is now a convert to the latter) well celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson has created a taste that is somewhere between the two. As it's name suggests it's great on toast but it can also make that great British meal essential, gravy. In fact it's superb in sandwiches and many other things.
This is the big brother to the recently reviewed HL-4040CN reviewed on the 26-10-07, it certainly is heavier – or I’m getting weaker. This is an All In One colour laser.
First the dimensions it is 40x55x42cm and weights 32kilos. So its bigger dimension wise and heavier weight wise than the HL-4040CN. The software install is quite quick and takes 420MB of hard disc space. It can be connected by Ethernet or by USB. There are two CD's one for PC and one for Mac.

Goodmans CD Micro System 1465i

Published in Entertainment on 26 Dec 2007
This unit has MW and FM radio, plays CD’s of most types including MP3, can play MP3 or WMA from SD cards or Flash Drives, take input from USB or and for good measure supports a range of iPods.
It is 22x15x24cm and shiny black in colour, it comes with two external speakers 22x15x17cm these are also black and should you wish you could also connect a sub woofer. The speakers output are 10watts each. The front of the unit has a range of buttons inputs and sensors, unlike some items I managed to do most things direct from the buttons.

HP Photosmart C8180

Published in Printers/Scanners on 24 Dec 2007
This is a All In One as it scans, copies and prints but it also has a built in Light Scribe CD drive so it can also do that bit more, so I suppose it’s an All In One plus unit.
I have seen several small printers that are really designed as photo printers but they were all only for 15x10cm output. This is a full A4 printer and that as well as copying can be down from the four buttons on the interface that slides out 45% at the front, it also has a huge 7x5cm display. The unit is 43x38x19cm and the front of the unit also has four card slots and a USB stick slot that allows Pict Bridge connection.

EasyUse Mobile Phone

Published in Phones on 23 Dec 2007
For anyone with poor sight a mobile phone is normally a nightmare, however this offering has large buttons and an easy to read display, ideal for anyone who wants just a phone.
The ITT EasyUse mobile phone is a light grey colour and the phone weights only 112grams it is 13x5.5x1.5cm and the monochrome 4 line display is 3.5x2.2cm. There are twelve large buttons (four rows of three) each 1.4x1cm and all have a large white numeral on a blue background. Above this are the green call button and the red end call button both with large white illustrations on them these are each 2cm long.

ZyXEL Cable Router with wireless

Published in Wireless on 21 Dec 2007
Not only can this connect all those on a single connection from NTL/Telewest/Virgin but also allow wireless connection and it even has a wireless/USB stick for those PC’s or notebook without wireless built in.
Until recently my connection was ADSL and then I decided that the NTL/Virgin offer was worth the swap. You get a small box with a coaxial connection in and then a single Ethernet connector to go to a PC so the change to look at the ZyXEL Cable Modem was ideal. You may already have and this was used to help with that. However at that stage the Wireless aerial and USB stick that come with this Router had yet to leave the box. Then the in so Wireless was required and this provided it.

Epson Stylus DX7400

Published in Printers/Scanners on 19 Dec 2007
This is quite a squat unit, it will never pass the lounge police as it is very dark grey, so if not in an office into a cupboard never to see the light of day.
It is 44x34x16cm the latter figure the height increases by 18cm when there is paper in the rear vertical tray waiting for printing. This is an All In One unit as it prints copies and scans. There is no fax capability so it's not a Multi Function unit. As always the first set of Epson cartridges (four colour four cartridges unit) last very little time as a good proportion go on the initial charge.
After my recent review of the excellent Analogue TV from Polaroid I took little persuading to look at their brand new digital offering.
The Polaroid Definia is totally black not only the screen surround but also the speakers mounted below the screen. First the dimensions, it is 83x58cm and the rectangular stand (23x51cm) raises it 7cm above the base. It is a maximum of 10cm thick and the actual screen is 69x39cm giving the notional 32inch diagonal measurement, (actually 31.

Two MB Games from Hasbro

Published in Entertainment on 16 Dec 2007
At the time of writing several large retailers had special offers on certain MB games so look around and you may even beat the prices I can find. Here I am looking at an International version of Subbuteo and Operation Rapid Response.
Subbuteo Dream Team Stadium It was certainly a long time ago when I played Subbuteo - I seem to rember that my older brother always thrashed me - but that was the prerogative of an older brother. While the green playing surface is the same not much else is. The players used to be cardboard now they are high quality plastic (three to a card) and with the 'Dream Team' they come from different teams.

Nabaztag Wi Fi Rabbit

Published in Wireless on 14 Dec 2007
This is something that I first saw just over a year ago, a version was available but a new version was only a couple of weeks away. I gave up after six months of requests and then a few weeks ago I am told it’s available.
First this is an almost white rabbit that seems to have only ears, face and part of it's upper body. It is a maximum of 24cm tall to the tips of it's upraised ears and a maximum of 40cm round. Looking at my notes of a year ago I see that it has 17 different colours of lights not only displayable in it's belly but also it's face and ears.
samsung s85 digital compact camer

Samsung S85 Digital Camera

Published in Cameras on 12 Dec 2007
Samsung have had two sets of digital cameras launched this year, here I am looking at the S85 the first I have seem from the most recent launch in August.
Even though it is small enough to fit in the palm of my hand it feels very solid and weights in at 215grams. It is 9.5x6.5x2cm but the last measurement the thickness increases by 3cm when you are switched on and at full zoom. This has a 5x optical zoom (just that little bit better than the norm of 3x) and can take images up to 8.
Certainly a lot more than another bedroom TV, this has the ability to view HD, it is of course widescreen and at 19inches is far more watchable and just for good measure it has a built in DVD player.
First the measurements it is 47x35x6cm when on the stand that is 24x17cm and raises it up by 4cm. The screen is 41x26cm and this gives the 19inch diagonal measurement. There is a 52 page A4 manual and it is filled with lots of illustrations that are useful if only because this is not just a TV but so many devices. The only assembly required is to slot the base into the TV, no screws or twist and it's a good fit.
Two very different toys but both suitable for kids of roughly the same age. Marvin’s Magic teaches the child to use his hands to deceive and Electronic Scrapheap Welder to build or rebuild.
Marvin's Magic Freaky Body Illusions This is a set of illusions with the required props to make them work. Unless you are lot more adept than myself you will also need a DVD player to watch how the illusions are achieved. It mentions the DVD in several places on the box but no where does it actually say it's required. However I doubt you would get very far without it.

ZyXEL Homeplug AV

Published in Wireless on 7 Dec 2007
Do you have somewhere that you want Ethernet connectivity but running a cable is difficult or not desirable, does it area have mains electricity? If so this offering could be the answer.
The ZyXEL Homeplug PLA400 comes in a pack of two (other numbers are available) and what looks like a small router is at the end of standard 13amp power lead. Plug one of these into your router and the 13amp lead into a wall socket.

Polaroid m737t Digital Camera

Published in Cameras on 5 Dec 2007
Not a name big in digital cameras but certainly the name for Instant prints as the Polaroid Instamatic was (and as far as I know still is) the name for instant pictures, here however a conventional digital camera.
It is two tone grey with a silvered ring around the lens. A seven mega pixel offering a year ago would have been a really powerful offering. It has the standard 3x optical but they - unfortunately - still use the optical x digital to produce a figure of 12x something that most companies have been shamed out of doing. The only real use for digital zoom on a camera is to zoom into part of a taken image on the display.

HP Officejet Pro K5400

Published in Printers/Scanners on 3 Dec 2007
For an inkjet printer this is big, but in comparison to some so are it’s most expensive part it’s ink cartridges, hence the claim ‘25% cheaper to run than a laser printer’.
First the all important dimensions for this Officejet printer it is 49x38x21cm and it weights in at 8.8kilos. There are only three buttons on the front edge, the only one you are likely to use is the on/off. There are four tiny LED's to tell you if any of the four cartridges need changing. The rear has the power input (it's a massive power brick) and the USB input.
clock

Unusual bedside clocks

Published in Misc on 2 Dec 2007
Firstly a clock that can wake you to your favourite MP3 track and second a clock that runs on water and does so much more. Both these units are tiny and great for those who travel.
My Music Box MP3 Digital Player This is a 7cm black cube with a grey metal face that contains a 5x2cm LED display. Below this are seven buttons that control the clock and what MP3 track you play. The left and right sides have speaker grills while the back has the battery insertion point (four 'AA') a mini USB cable and slot for SD or MMC card. There is an instruction sheet.
This is a slim easy to install PVR that works well even when not connected to a roof aerial. In fact a good part of the review period was when attached to my kitchen TV.
First the all important dimensions it is 35x30x5cm silver grey in colour and it's face has a two line red LCD display 11.5x2cm. There is a large on/off knob to the left on the front but everything else is controlled from the 47 key remote control. After unpacking I attached it to my main TV and more importantly it's roof aerial. The first tune was quick and found 55 TV and Teletext channels and 26 radio channels.
If you are looking for a notebook to travel around with you – unless someone else carries it for you – then you certainly do not want one with a 15inch or 17inch display.
This is one with a 12.1 inch display and it comes in a variety of colours something that may bring favour with the ladies. I believe there is a pink one - luckily I was not sent it - I also remember green and blue. Mine was a sky blue offering. I am afraid I have to be a little vague as I have a pre production sample and certain drivers were missing as I assume was some of the software.

Pure Chronos II

Published in Wireless on 26 Nov 2007
This DAB radio (also has FM) is the same wedge shape and size as the recently reviewed Siesta, there are of course differences the first of which is the colouring it looks a silver grey great for a bedroom.
First the all important dimensions these are of course maximum 19x17x6cm, the 19cm width is only 3cm at the rear. Under the unit is where the power adapter enters and where the aerial wire exits. The power lead is an adequate 1.8metres, the aerial lead is a barely adequate 60cm.

Music For The Kids

Published in Entertainment on 25 Nov 2007
Here I am looking at two devices the first something that was around when I was a kid – Rolf Harris promoted it – and the second something rather new in style and design.
Stylophone This has been around - almost since I was a kid - it was endorsed by Rolf Harris who first came to notice for his digery doo and not his paintings 'do you know what it is yet' those came a lot later. This to me looks identical to one I saw very many years ago it is 16x10x3.5cm. I doubt the original had MP3 input or probably not a headphone output as I don't think 3.5mm jack plugs were around then.

Logitech Alto Cordless

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 23 Nov 2007
This is the first of the latest batch of Logitech keyboards to come my way. This is a new breed of keyboard that notes the increased number of notebooks that people use on a desktop.
So apart from this being a full size keyboard it also comes with a stand to raise your notebooks screen so that in effect you have the same arrangement as you would get with a desktop, so you just put your laptop in the stand and forget it has a keyboard once you have tuned the cordless offering here to your notebook.

HP Officejet Pro L7680

Published in Printers/Scanners on 21 Nov 2007
As an Officejet it is unlikely to ever get past the ‘lounge police’ partly because it is not small but mainly because it is black with grey sides, shame really as it is a nice MFU.
Firstly for those occasional readers an MFU (Multi Function Unit) has fax capabilities whereas the AIO (All In One) does not. Both have the ability to print, scan and copy. It is 54x42x36cm and compare that to a lot of similar machines and you will see it is big. Mind you it has a duplex unit that adds to the second figure the depth and the third figure the height would be less without the page feed.
polaroid FLU 3232 LCD televisio

Polaroid 32inch TV (FLU-3232)

Published in Entertainment on 19 Nov 2007
This is an Analogue TV but it has almost any connection at the rear so with a digital PVR you have a new TV with the ability to view and play HD.
This is the first TV I have reviewed that is supplied with a screwdriver. Yes it is self assembly - of the stand - the screws are provided as are the screw holes and after a couple of minutes it is ready. A good idea should you ever need to relocate it as the box for a 32 inch TV is tiny only just bigger than the screen so the stand needs to be flat in the boxes back.
