See if you can spot where I made a type that changed “faxes” into “taxes” in this review. There is more than one possible location but which was the most appropriate.
The Samsung C460FW is a multifunction device.  It is based on a colour laser and has an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) module mounted on top of this combination of printer and flatbed scanner.  This Samsung product provides the user with print, scan, copy and fax functionality plus a choice of USB, Ethernet or wireless connectivity.

Wireless Digital Music System

Published in Wireless on 24 May 2014
My collection of favourite music has its origins in the vinyl era of recordings. I mention this merely as a lead in to a recent visit I paid to a location known as the Vinyl Factory in the Soho area of central London.
Hosting this particular event was Naim, a company founded in 1973 by Julian Vereker MBE.  As the winner of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise on three occasions, including the award it received for its ground-breaking design of digital music systems in 2014, Naim has built up an impressive reputation with its work in the field of audio system.

Slim and Wide

Published in Entertainment on 22 May 2014
Bearing the message that its contents was made up of the “World’s Slimmest Soundbar”, the subject of this next review arrived in a box that measured 390 x 220 x 1280mm (H x W x L) which did make me wonder about the soundbar that I has just agreed to review. Those measurements and the World’s Slimmest claim did not seem to match.
The soundbar, which is the subject of this review, is the STA-1200BSW which offers a range of connectivity options including Bluetooth.  Opening the outer box revealed a further three boxes and a separate subwoofer unit.  The longest of these three boxes, measuring 205 x 100 x 1240mm, was the container for the actual soundbar element, various leads and a button battery remote control unit.  The other two boxes (480 x 200 x 200mm) were totally empty.

The Trouble with Hochwald

Clockwork Tales: Of Glass and Ink is a Hidden Object Adventure game from the development team of Artifex Mundi. This game is available in Collector’s Edition format from Avanquest’s GSP label.
As with other Collector’s Edition format, this Clockwork Tales comes with a number of bonus items, many of which are available immediately from the Extra’s option on the title screen.  While it is not surprising to note that items such as wallpaper, music and concept art can be accessed straightaway, it might seem surprising to find that Hidden Object scenes and mini-game puzzles are also immediately available.

As the household computer system takes over the task of hosting your entertainment content consisting of digital images, music and video/movie collections, so the need increases for software to supply the functionality in order to make best use of this data. Management and playback features plus the ability to reach out for additional information and purchase new content are all issues that need to come under consideration.

“There is more than one way to skin a” – the reason for my not completing this saying is that I am currently being stared at by a bundle of fur busily sharpening his claws just waiting to see whether I dare or not. While torn jeans might be fashionable elsewhere, it does not include my current abode and also I am somewhat attached to the unblemished state of my legs to risk coming into contact with those claws. However I still wish to make the point that there is often more than one way to achieve an aim. In this case the aim is a method of allowing a smartphone or tablet to access content stored on an external device.
Previously I have looked at a direct physical connection using OTG (On the Go) USB linking.  This method is fine if your mobile device supports the technology but not all such devices do so.  SanDisk, with its expertise in the development of memory devices, has produced a solution that takes a different route.
793944 Nakamichi Dragon Lil

A Flowering Speaker

Published in Wireless on 15 May 2014
When I hear the words “Dragon Lily” it always seems to evoke memories of tales based on espionage featured in numerous old movies that were popular in days gone by. However “Dragon Lily” is also the name of a flowering plant and a product from Nakamichi. It should not come as a surprise to discover that it is the technology device rather than the horticultural one that is the subject of this review.
The Nakamichi Dragon Lily is a speaker system although I am a little hesitant as to whether a single device can really qualify for the system designation.  Of course it could be argued that the various connectivity options available with this product are the reason why it is deemed a system.  Options are available for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connections.
793941 Shadows of the Vatican Legends of Atlanti

Shadows of the Vatican Act One

Published in Entertainment on 14 May 2014
Described as a third-party point-and-click adventure game, Shadows on the Vatican has been adapted from the David Yallop book “In God’s Name”. This book, which is featured in the game, was inspired by recent events in Italian history.
Unlike most computer games, which tend to be self-contained units, Shadows on the Vatican was designed, right from the start, to be an adventure that is spread over four acts which will be supplied on an individual basis.  This approach is, no doubt, partially influenced by the Marvel/DC Comics connection with Lorenzo Ruggiero who is the game’s Art Director.  The first act of this adventure, entitled Greed, is now available as part of Avanquest’s GSP game catalogue.

Now up to version X7, PhotoPlus is the latest edition of Serif’s photo editing and management software. As is the usual policy with the product line-up from Serif, you will need to enter the relevant serial number as part of the software’s installation procedure.  You can also make decisions as to the location for the software and any file associations that are tied to the product before settling down to make use of PhotoPlus X7.

While Nuance’s OmniPage is the dominant force in the field of OCR, it is not the only option as this next offering clearly indicates.
FineReader is an optical character recognition (OCR) software package.  It has been developed by ABBYY to convert scanned paper documents into an editable format.  The latest version of this software is FineReader 12 Professional.  Despite the Professional tag, this appears to be the standard version of the software and it is available from DownloadBuyer.com priced at £89.10.

A Touch Screen Monitor

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 8 May 2014
While ruling the roost on tablets and smartphones, touch screens have yet to do more than scratch the surface with computer desktop monitors.
Monitors often have a habit of hiding their functionality behind a model number which means little or nothing to the average purchaser.  Take for example the current monitor sitting on my workspace and providing feedback as I type in this review.  AOC, in its wisdom, has decided that this particular monitor should be known to all and sundry as the i2472Pwhut/BK model.

Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus

Published in Entertainment on 7 May 2014
In the Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus game, you are cast in the role of Sarah Green, a young detective about to embark on her first solo case. She is given the task of solving the mysterious disappearance of a local doctor. This is Dr. Magnus, of the game’s title, who has been acting strangely following the tragic death of his wife and daughter in a car accident.
The  opening sequence of The Dreamatorium of Dr. Magnus is less than inspiring as a series of static images and printed text introduce you to your character, a victim of some strange dreams that are relevant to the story, and the case that is about to be investigated.  Options are available to adjust the volume level of the background music and sound effects plus play in widescreen or windowed mode.  Two levels of game play difficulty are available.

A Tablet for the Desktop

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 6 May 2014
The Android operating system and touch capability go together like fish & chips even when served up on the desktop.
The ViewSonic VSD241 is an All-in-One (AIO) device that brings Android functionality to a 24-inch touch screen enabled monitor.  With dimensions of 604 x 419 x 187mm (W x H x D) and weighing around 7Kg, the VSD 241 is definitely a product that will be more at home when seated on a flat workspace.  An adjustable book stand attachment enables the VSD241 to be positioned upright on an appropriate work area for easy access when carrying out various tasks.

Canon PIXMA MX535

Published in Printers/Scanners on 3 May 2014
The Canon PIXMA MX535 is a multifunction device that offers print, scan, copy and Fax capabilities. Other features include an ADF (Automatic Document Feed) and automatic Duplex printed to help save on paper. There is support for both wired and wireless connectivity when adding this device to your computer set-up.
Predominately black in colour with white labels, the PIXMA MX535 has dimensions of 458 x 385 x 200mm (W x D x H) and weighs in at 8.5kg.  Rounded corners and a tapered top help give the unit an element of style but, even so, this product would be more at home in an office environment or, at a pinch, a study room for the home worker. Built into the scanner lid, sitting on top of the unit, is the AFD module.

Music in Wet Conditions

Published in Wireless on 1 May 2014
With the adverse weather conditions we have had to endure of late in the UK, we should not be surprised at the arrival of waterproof devices such as this next product.
“Splish, Splash, I was taking a bath” is the first line of a pop song of the last century.  It was a hit for both Bobby Darin (better known for his Beyond the Sea and Mac the Knife hit records – check Google for some of his performances) and Charlie Drake (a comic 5 foot 1 inch bundle of energy with red hair).  Obviously I am showing my age with these memories as both performers have been dead for a number of years now.

Escape from Atlantis

Published in Entertainment on 30 Apr 2014
Atlantis has long been a popular source of inspiration for those creating different types of entertainment including computer-based games. One such offering is Legends of Atlantis Exodus. Developed by Boonty Nexway Games, this title, belonging to the Time Management genre, is now available from Avanquest’s GSP catalogue of titles.
According to legend, the island state of Atlantis was a centre of civilisation and a haven of culture far beyond that which had been obtainable by the rest of the known world.  However disaster struck and this idyllic paradise was swallowed up by the surrounding water.  This game concerns the events that led up to this destruction.

A Dedicated Scanner

Published in Printers/Scanners on 29 Apr 2014
Many of the scanners that come by way, for testing, form part of an All-in-One or multifunction devices. However there are exceptions and this is one of those occasions.
The Brother ADS-1100W is a compact personal page scanner which means it is restricted to scanning single pages rather than a book or magazine.  As the “W” part of its model number might indicate, this scanner can connect to a computer system, whether of the Windows or Mac family, via wireless.  There is also an option for a wired USB connection when setting up this device which has the capability to scan both sides of each page simultaneously.

An Archos Tablet

Published in Misc on 26 Apr 2014
It has been quite a while since I last had the opportunity to check out an Archos device. This lengthy period was brought to an end with the arrival of a product with a slightly unusual title.
The 79 Platinum is not a precious metal mined in a particular year.  Instead it is a member of the Archos family of Tablets.  As the “79” part of its title might indicate, this is a Tablet with a 7.9-inch screen.  While wishful thinking might hope for casing constructed of Platinum, the reality is that this device, running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), has a sleek aluminium casing.

Published in Misc on 24 Apr 2014
Rather than keeping their head in the clouds, users are increasingly using this virtual environment for storing their data which is then accessible from various locations.
When considering Cloud storage, your basic choice is either to make use of storage supplied by somebody else, whether it is a paid for service or one of the free offerings with limited capacity, or manage your own Cloud storage.  With this latter choice, you retain full control over the data and avoid any issues that might arise such as the Patriot Act for data stored on servers based in America.

Brother MFC-1810

Published in Printers/Scanners on 22 Apr 2014
While most All-in-One devices are based on an inkjet printer, this next model from Brother features a laser printer.
The Brother MFC-1810 is an All-in-One device.  Combining an A4 flatbed scanner with a printer, this product provides the user with print, scan and copy facilities plus Fax capabilities and an ADF (Automatic Document Feed) feature.  Rather than the more common inkjet variety, the printer in this model is a mono laser unit making the product more suitable to the small office/home environment.  Connectivity is via a standard USB lead which you need to provide.

External Android Content

Published in Misc on 19 Apr 2014
If you do not have enough storage space on your Android device for your music and videos then this next product could solve your problem.
Recently I was introduced to OTG (On The Go) technology with the arrival of a small piece of kit.  This kit consisted of a lead with a male micro USB plug at one end and a female standard USB plug at the other end.  The purpose of this product was to allow the user to add additional storage and content to their Android Smartphone or Tablet.  You attach the OTG kit to the mobile device and then plug in a flash stick to the vacant USB plug.

It was nearly three years ago that I first encountered CrazyTalk Animator at the BETT Computer Show and wrote my review of the product. A meteor, strange experiments, missing children and a collection of flowers all feature in a title developed by Urse Games.
Supplied by Alawar, Questerium Sinister Trinity is a Hidden Object Adventure game developed by Urse Games and available in Collector’s Edition format.  As usual with Collector’s Edition titles, this game comes with various bonus items.  Some of the additional content, such as Music, Concept Art, Wallpaper and Screensavers, are available immediately while the ability to replay mini games is only allowed when they have been tackled in the main game.

Ball Shaped Speakers

Published in Entertainment on 15 Apr 2014
I seem to have an affinity with speakers that have unusual shapes. This is not another example but this time from a company I had not heard of before.
Developed by Nakamichi, the NBS 10 is a portable Bluetooth Stereo Speaker product.  For those not too familiar with Nakamichi, and until recently I would have counted myself among this group, I should explain that this company has been involved in the research and development of electromagnetism, magnetic recording, acoustics and communications since 1948.

Motorola Moto X Smartphone

Published in Phones on 12 Apr 2014
Motorola, Google and Lenovo sounds as if it could be a pop group of the sixties while Moto X might well be the name by which a high profile political figure, of the same period, might be known. However the technology associated with these names is most certainly of the current era.
While the Motorola Moto X smartphone has a similar appearance to the company’s earlier Moto G offering, there is enough difference between the two models to mean that the accessories launched with the Moto G are not compatible with the new Moto X – a mistake in my opinion.  As the last smartphone developed under the ownership of Google and now part of the Lenovo family of products, the Moto X will be available in a choice of Woven Black or Woven White.

A Style Line Monitor

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 10 Apr 2014
Last year I attended a press event and requested to review a couple of monitors from one company. The first one to arrive is the subject of this review.
As part of its extensive range of monitors AOC has released the e2451Fh model.  This monitor forms part of the company’s Style Line that makes use of the latest LED-backlit LCD technology for displaying its full HD images on a 24-inch screen.  Both the stand and the surrounding bezel are decked out in a lacquered white finish.  While I personally prefer a black finish for a monitor, I have to admit that this white offering does tend to grow on you over a period of time.

What Jack Did Next

Published in Entertainment on 9 Apr 2014
This is one of those occasions when a game arrives for review just after seeing a film based on the same subject matter that was the prequel to the game.
The sixth title in the Dark Parables series of Hidden Object Adventure games is entitled Jack and the Sky Kingdom developed by Blue Tea Games.  As usual with Dark Parable titles, the game’s designers have taken a well known fairy story and looked to see what might have occurred after the original tale had ended.
While many printers now offer a remote print solution through their own dedicated app, this next product offers a wide ranging solution for multiple printers.
The xPrintServer Cloud Print edition is a product that has been designed by Lantronix to allow users the functionality to send print jobs from Android based mobile devices to network based printers.  Developed as part of the company’s family of mobile print solutions, the xPrintServer can also handle those devices that are running Google’s Chrome Browser and the Chrome operating system plus other units running off the network.

FaceFilter Pro 3.0

Published in Software on 5 Apr 2014
Arriving looking like a drowned rat, due to one of the heavy downpours that occurred recently, I was introduced to this next makeover product. Unfortunately it only worked on digital images and not bedraggled reviewers.
Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder.  It is also said that the camera never lies.  However, in this digital age, the camera’s output can be manipulated to tell less than the whole truth.  One product that offers to help in this respect is FaceFilter from Reallusion.  As it tiles clearly indicates, this software product concentrates its functionality on the facial area of the subject matter rather than general body sculpture. Now up to version 3.
