Acer Travel Mate 3022 WTMi

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 22 Oct 2006
This small notebook is powerful and is packed with loads of extras including some very useful Acer software utilities that make adjustments a breeze.
It is 30x22x3cm and weights only 1.7kilos. The screen size is 26x16cm giving the diagonal viewing size of 12inches. The screen resolution is 1280x800, given that you tend to sit quite close to a notebook it is quite readable. First surprise it is not notebook grey but cream, when I got it others had already used it and there were a few marks on the keyboard that would probably not show if it had been grey.

Christmas Gifts Part 1

Published in Entertainment on 22 Oct 2006
With Christmas now bearing down very fast all those presents for the younger – and not so – young ones are fast becoming a nightmare, for the more Gadgetly minded I hope these suggestions help.
Radica Connectv Cricket Just imagine the scenario England win a one day series, far fetched maybe but with this simulation it certainly possible and should you have longer you can even play Test cricket best of all, wind or rain or even bad light need not be a factor as you play on your TV and you can make the unit your opponent so you do not even need someone to play with.

Focus Driving Test Success

Published in Software on 19 Oct 2006
Until now this has been sold in modules – just like the test itself – now Focus have offered the whole package on two DVD’s and amazingly it is all sold for £9.99

Canon Pixma iP3300

Published in Printers/Scanners on 17 Oct 2006
Another printer looking like a rectangular box, however providing the other half does not mind the grey colour then surely it’s all about the print quality and print speed.
The is a four ink and four cartridge offering from Canon so should you be a heavy user of one colour you save a little in ink costs by having to buy only that cartridge. Fitting them is foolproof as unless you get a red light for confirmation you know it is not inserted correctly. So when you see four red lights under the cartridges you know they are correctly inserted.
The blurb says works without any training, well always the one to take people at their word I installed it on a notebook that had no files of mine, installed it and then started the program.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred comes on two CD's and say's it needs 1.3GB of hard disc space, the actual space taken on the notebook was 1523MB and the install time was only 12 minutes. On starting the program you get a toolbar along the top of the screen, so as not to give it anything I used Windows Notepad and started speaking, reproduced below are the first words I spoke and the three errors, with what I intended added in brackets, I was astonished.

Dream Toys 2006

Published in Entertainment on 13 Oct 2006
My annual trip to the Dream Toys event found new and enhanced toys, games and gadgets for kids both big and small for Christmas and beyond.
Prices of things on offer range from a fiver to hundreds. As always I try to find things that do not break the bank, mind you the report does end with one extravagance. Lets start with one of the more noisy, Dare Devil Stunt set around £34.99 from Flair. It needs space and then with practice the motor cycle will jump the gap between the supplied objects, Evil Knieval style.

Pure Elan RV40

Published in Entertainment on 10 Oct 2006
This DAB and FM radio also features ReVu that allows what you have just heard to be replayed. It can also accept a Charge PAK meaning no more batteries to buy, or course you can also run it from the mains.
Pure are perhaps the best known name in DAB technology and have produced a whole range of offerings. I recently reviewed their excellent a real portable unit. Here we have a more conventional portable unit that can go with you round the house and out into the garden. Pocket DAB1500 (28/8/06) The is 28x7.5x17cm however the last figure the height increases by 48cm when the seven section rod aerial is fully raised.

HP Photosmart C4180

Published in Printers/Scanners on 8 Oct 2006
This All In One is functional in design however when the job is to print, scan and copy appearance is less important than delivering the goods and this it does with the added plus of six ink quality.
The is a rectangular box, 32x27x15cm and when the paper tray is lowered with paper in it the middle figure increases by another 15cm. However I am not decrying it for being rectangular or functional it does it's job well so what does shape matter. It is of course light grey - maybe a sin as far as the fairer sex are concerned - but it does what it should.
A true wireless keyboard, small in size and your only loss is the numeric keypad, it also has the possibility of being a mouse substitute as it has a rollball and mouse keys, ideal for use with a media centre type PC.

External Storage

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 3 Oct 2006
For those out there old enough to remember when a floppy disc was all the external storage you ever needed, some of the capacity figures mentioned today are mind blowing.

Maxfield Max Movie

Published in Entertainment on 1 Oct 2006
This tiny unit is somewhat confusing as being so small the controls are multi purpose and therefore there is a learning curve. However it is more than a standard MP3 player.
hp photosmart 385 photo printe

HP Photosmart 385

Published in Printers/Scanners on 28 Sep 2006
A small printer for printing photographs either from various card types, direct from the printer via (Pict Bridge) cable, from a PC via USB or even direct from a PDA or phone via Bluetooth.
In that list I did not mention standalone USB sticks or hard discs but they will normally work as well, using the Pict Bridge connector as the Photosmart 385 has a screen for selection of images, however some external devices can have a capacity two large for the internal memory to read so you are unlikely to be able to read a 5GB hard disc full or images. The printer is 21x12x11cm and weights only 1300 grams.

A Chocolate Phone

Published in Phones on 26 Sep 2006
This is not something to eat, in the early summer LG launched their black phone, now in late summer their white phone and I understand later in the year a shocking pink one is to follow.
The White Chocolate offering is not large in size but does make control easy. While there is a manual the getting started sheet should enable most to get up and running. It is 9x4.5x1.5cm and weights well under 100grams. The back slides down 3.5cm to reveal a keypad. The right side has a proprietary USB socket under a bung along with the on/off and MP3/camera buttons.
evesham portable dt

Evesham Portable DTV

Published in Entertainment on 24 Sep 2006
Fancy a Digital TV that will fit into a pocket? Well this offering from Evesham has a seven inch screen and given the right conditions can view any UK Digital TV station.
The Evesham Portable Digital TV is 20x13x2cm and weights just over 500grams, so a large pocket is a possibility. However when used in a house you get the full range of Digital Channels (Freeview) when plugged into a standard aerial socket via an adapter supplied with the unit. When using it with the supplied magnetic stick lead in the house only a few channels were available.

HP Compaq NX6325

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 21 Sep 2006
Yes the title is right, as some may know HP now own Compaq and whilst new models come out they are badged HP even though the identity says Compaq NX6325.
First the size, it is 32.5x26x4cm and weights 2.8kilos. The screen is 30.5x23cm giving the notional 15inch screen size. The left side has LAN port, VGA outlet, 2xUSB2 ports, microphone and headset outputs and PCMCIA and PC Express slots. The front has four small LED's and a single card slot that accepts probably the five most popular card types, SD/MMC/XD/SmartMedia and Memory Stick. The main one missing is Compact Flash/Micro Drive.

Brother DCP 8065DN

Published in Printers/Scanners on 19 Sep 2006
This is an All In One but not an inkjet, it is a laser unit, it can print in mono, it can copy in mono and scan in colour, however unlike a lot of laser All In Ones it is not huge in size or weight.
So first the dimensions it is 53x43x43cm and weights an amount easily moveable by an adult. The dimensions are maximum sizes as the top is larger than the base to accommodate the scanner. In fact it fits in a space often taken by one of it's inkjet brothers (no pun intended). As a printer this will print 28PPM of documents for as long as the 250 sheet paper tray has content.
logitech mx5000 laser keyboar

Logitech MX5000 Laser

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 17 Sep 2006
This is a cordless keyboard and mouse set from Logitech, however it contains a number of extras within the box.
This is described as the 'World's First Smart Desktop', well it is still a mouse and a keyboard but the mouse is not only cordless but it can sit in it's charging dock so it never needs to run out of power. The keyboard is much more than the standard 105 key offering.
The Phillips speakers are rated at 50 watts and described as Hi-Fidelity sound. With the sub-woofer tucked away the speakers are small enough to fit into most layouts.
I used these speakers not only on a PC and a notebook but also connecting a couple of MP3 players and I was not disappointed. The black wooden sub woofer box is 30x18.5x20cm with leads inserted, there are no controls on the front, in fact the rear has two built in leads for the remote control and the mains lead, also a single twist knob for the bass and a jack socket to take the leads from the speakers.
Yes it’s true shop now have their Christmas displays – and not just at Harrods – so it must be autumn. Here are two items that are likely to be on your kids wish lists.
Mood Beams Stated as suitable for age 4 upwards I can certainly say that this ** old man was fascinated by one of the modes. There are four different models Shy, Surprised, Curious and Silly, I was sent Shy who is a white soft plastic head on feet, press his head and he glows an alternating red and white colour. Press his head again and he goes into Rainbow mode scrolling between all the rainbow colours.
maxfield diablo portable music playe

Maxfield Diablo

Published in Entertainment on 10 Sep 2006
This is a music and FM radio player, it can also be a rather good voice recorder. All this in a very tiny case that easily sits even in the smallest palm.
This is a MP3 player, voice recorder and FM radio all in a very small housing. It is 7x3.5x1.5cm and weights only around 60grams with it's two AAA batteries inserted. The screen is only slightly more than 2x1.5cm but is amazingly clear and can display up to six lines of information all easily readable.

Acer 37inch TV

Published in Entertainment on 7 Sep 2006
Having recently had the use of the Goodmans 37inch offering this one came in as the other was returned, same screen size but a little bigger and somewhat heavier.
The previous review ended on the second day of the Open this did the final two days and now it's working well for the early European football games as well as the European Athletics. It's just a shame there are so few worthwhile programs on for those of us who dislike reality TV such as Big Brother, Love Island, Find a New Maria, X Factor etc etc.

Two or three times a year a get the chance to tell you about my hobby Jazz, here are two further CD’s from a label with a jazz section.

HP Deskjet 5940

Published in Printers/Scanners on 3 Sep 2006
A rapid printer that also produces rather nice photographs perhaps this could be the inkjet printer that is a good all rounder.
It is 43x32x14cm with paper inserted, the 14cm is the measurement at the rear and this becomes 11cm at the centre and only 5cm at the front. Silver/Grey in colour with black for the base paper tray. There are three buttons and two LED's on the left front edge but in all probability you will only use the leftmost one on/off.  Below this is a Pict Bridge port. On the back there is the entry point for the DC adapter plug and the USB lead.

canon dc100 camcorde

Canon Digital Camcorder

Published in Cameras on 29 Aug 2006
This camcorder writes directly to DVD’s – either R or RW – and as such avoids any possible data transfer problems to a PC.
Small enough to fit in a wide pocket, the is 12x5x8.5cm and given that the mini DVD are 8cm it could not be and smaller. The weight is around 400grams. Canon DC100 This unit can use DVD-R or DVD-RW discs the differences are not just that a DVD-R can only be recorded once it is then finalised and the disc taken out, place it in any DVD player - either PC or standalone - and watch your work.

Pure Pocket DAB 1500

Published in Entertainment on 27 Aug 2006
A truly portable DAB radio that can run for the best part of the day on a single charge on it’s built in battery. Now could this be a true portable DAB radio.
I have reviewed a couple of small DAB radios but they both used standard batteries. Now technology has improved, battery drain is less and above all the earpieces that form the aerial have improved and the unit is far more useable in a whole range of environments. It is 11x6.5x2cm and weights less than 150grams. The centre on the right side is where the excellent Sennheiser earbuds fit.

Chessmaster 10 from Focus

Published in Software on 25 Aug 2006
I am no chess expert, but I first played at school some many years ago, I never really progressed beyond the basics, normally I can manage to avoid ‘fools mate’ but with this package I should improve.
Strange how some things pass you by, HP made a big thing of the ability to write on CD’s or DVD using lasers, not that long after all HP CD and DVD drives are being made by Lite-On.
Firstly what is LightScribe, it is the ability for the laser that writes the CD/DVD to also write or draw on the reverse of the drive - the side that may normally get a felt pen or even a label attached to it. Currently this is only mono but I am told that there are coloured discs about but even these only remove the top colour to expose the one below so if the surface was green with a yellow coating below the text or image would be in yellow.
canon pixma ip6220d inkjet printe

Canon Pixma IP6220D

Published in Printers/Scanners on 20 Aug 2006
Often you buy a printer for text with the fact that it can print photos is an extra. With the Canon Pixma IP6220D it’s the other way round, this is a excellent photo printer.
It is a small and smart enclosure at 42x26x15 the latter increases by another 15cm when paper is stored in the 'sit up and beg' vertical position at the rear of the unit. This is a four ink - two cartridge - solution and that makes the printing quality and speed even more unusual.

Fusion Freeview Box

Published in Entertainment on 17 Aug 2006
From the same company that makes the excellent DigiFusion dual tuner unit with hard disc, this is a basic Freeview box at a basic price.
Installation should be a case of putting the batteries in the remote, connecting the aerial and plugging in the main lead. I did this but only the red light appeared on the Fusion box. I then checked the remote batteries and tried two different sets with the same response. I then unplugged the unit and plugged in again and this time pressed the button on the remote straight away and everything was fine.
