Photoshop Elements 13

Published in Software on 23 Dec 2014
While Adobe is intent on herding its business and professional clientele towards the Cloud with its Creative Cloud offering and various CS services, the more budget conscious consumer customer can opt for a product such as the company’s popular Photoshop Elements
Now up to version 13, Photoshop Elements is currently available from the company’s website as an upgrade priced at £66.43.  You could also opt for purchasing an upgrade for the combined bundle of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 13 for £100.61.  This review is based entirely on a copy of Photoshop Elements 13.
837636 avanquest 4 Play Dark Mysterie

A Collection of Dark Mysteries

Published in Entertainment on 20 Dec 2014
Dark Mysteries is another offering from Avanquest’s GSP 4-Play series. The four titles making up this collection are The Beast of Lycan Isle, The Soul Keeper, The Sleeping Palace and Ghost Painting. All four titles belong to the Hidden Object Adventure genre. As usual with the various 4-Play collections, each of the titles has to be installed separately from the same front end menu of offerings.
The Beast of Lycan Isle can be played in either Casual or Expert mode.  The game casts you in the role of Luna who responds to a call for help from her friend Tara who has been investigating the cult of Madra Alta or Wolf Man.  Spread over five chapters, the game has an inventive opening that involves blurred scenes until you manage to locate your glasses. As usual your inventory runs across the bottom of the scene when in Adventure mode.

Battery power from the pocket is the aim of this next product from PNY.
Like a virus attack or attempted phishing expedition, the situation of encountering a smartphone with a drained battery when you really need to make a vital phone call (for some every phone call is considered vital) could happen at any time.  Perhaps you think it will never happen to you but just you wait.

Sumos Can Jump!

Published in Wireless on 17 Dec 2014
Continuing the MiniDrones are coming theme, this next product has more of a tank feel as it travels around and over obstacles.
Whenever the subject of Sumo comes up, my thoughts immediately go towards the full-contact wrestling sport so popular in Japan.  Two very large and over-weight men try to push each other off a combat mat.  Just looking at these man-mountain combatants gives you the impression that they could well be lacking in one particular skill level – that of jumping.  However there is one Sumo that does have this skill and that is the appropriately named Jumping Sumo.

Second Generation Moto X

Published in Phones on 16 Dec 2014
As with the Moto G, reviewed earlier, the Moto X is now available as a second generation product. Motorola has taken this opportunity to make a number of changes to enhance the appeal of the company’s top of the range product.
Placed side-by-side with its earlier creation, the second generation Moto X is clearly larger than its sibling.  The device’s width has been increased to 72.4mm while its height has grown by over 11mm to 140.8mm.  However Motorola has trimmed a few millimetres from the curved depth of this handset which now varies between 3.8mm and 9.9mm at its thickest point.  The increase in size has allowed Motorola to slot in a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Match-3 in Space

Published in Entertainment on 13 Dec 2014
Take a journey into space in one of two roles as you tackle Match-3 levels.
Galaxy Quest is a match-3 game that has more than a passing resemblance to a previous title, that of 1000LYA, from the same source.  You get the same mixture of numerous match-3 type grids interspersed with a story line that has an intergalactic theme with immobile characters who deliver their dialogue in printed text format. When setting up this game, which does have a visually impressive opening sequence, you can adjust various options.
837447 Brother Printer PTP750W Wireless Label Make

A Label Printer

Published in Printers/Scanners on 11 Dec 2014
While the majority of printers, whether of the laser 0r inkjet persuasion, can produce a range of documents, there is one particular skill at which they do not excel. The skill in question involves the creation of stick-on labels. Based on the concept of horses for courses, the solution would be to use a device that was specifically designed for the creation of labels that can easily be attached to where ever they would be most beneficial. One such product is the P750W designed by Brother.
Described as a “Professional Wireless PC Labelling Machine”, the P750W is a black box with dimensions of 78 x 152 x 143mm (W x D x H) and weighs 884g.  While a little too bulky and heavy for slipping in a pocket, this device is portable enough to be moved between various locations.  This printer makes use of thermal technology to create its labels on various widths of tape supplied in cassette form.

A Rolling Spider

Published in Entertainment on 10 Dec 2014
The MiniDrones are coming. Leading the aerial force is the subject of this next review.
Like many others, I am not the biggest fan of spiders but in this case I am willing to make an exception.  The arachnid in question is of the mechanical type and belongs to the Parrot family of MiniDrones which could well be invading our homes over the coming months.  This particular model is the Rolling Spider which combines the ability to travel over various surfaces, including walls and ceilings, plus take to the air in a kind of futuristic helicopter mode.

Bitdefender 2015

Published in Software on 9 Dec 2014
Like other important events such as Christmas, birthdays and the like, new versions of anti-virus and Internet security products appear, like clockwork, on an annual basis.
It is that time of year yet again as the latest version of Bitdefender Total Security, identified by its 2015 designation, makes an appearance.  For the purpose of this review the product was installed on a Windows 8.1 system with a 2.5GHz processor with 8GB of RAM. In company with other brands of protective software, Bitdefender is not happy to co-exist with competitive products.

An Adjustable Monitor

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 6 Dec 2014
As the window on to your computer inspired world, the monitor has an important role to fulfil as you word, play and carry out any tasks.
As part of its recent refresh of its monitor line up, ViewSonic has released its VG2438SM model.  This is a 24-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, a resolution of up to 1920 x 1200 pixels and a viewing angle of 178 degrees/178 degrees.  The VG2438SM has two integrated 2W stereo speakers. Norton Security

Published in Software on 4 Dec 2014
It is your responsibility to keep your computer safe from those who are intent on gaining unauthorised access.
An anti-virus product, at its basic level, is like an insurance policy.  It appears on an annual basis with an offering of protection, from the machinations of the less desirable elements of society, for the next twelve months.  Norton has been a leading name in the field of security.  The latest offering from the company is entitled Norton Security which offers protection for a PC, Mac, iOS and Android device.

Hidden Runaway

Published in Entertainment on 3 Dec 2014
This is one of those occasions when I missed out on the original title of a game. In this case the game was called Runaway. The follow up offering, from the same development team, is entitled Hidden Runaway. Featuring the same two main characters of Brian and Gina, Hidden Runaway belongs to the Hidden Object Adventure genre.
Unlike other games of this genre, Hidden Object offers little in the way of customising the game such as difficulty settings and volume levels.  You can, however, play this game in different languages.  This feature is achieved by selecting from flags representing the languages.  Up to four game profiles can be created with each one represented by a picture of a chicken – actually the pictures are of a hen or cockerel.

A Bridge-like Speaker

Published in Wireless on 2 Dec 2014
Following on from the NBS8, recently reviewed on Gadgetspeak.com, Nakamichi has launched the next product in its range of portable Bluetooth speakers. Not surprisingly this next model has been named the NBS9.
According to the design department at Nakamichi, or maybe it was the marketing department, the shape of the NBS9 takes its inspiration from the traditional phone shape.  While I am not going to argue with this point of view, I prefer to look on the NBS9 more as a hump-backed bridge, a bit like the one I drive over most weekends.

Acronis True Image 2015

Published in Software on 29 Nov 2014
When was the last time you made a backup of your valuable computer data? Hopefully it was within a period that could be called “recent”. I know it can be a bind to fit such activities into busy modern day living but back-up software, such as Acronis True Image, can be set to schedule this type of operation and automate the process for you so you do not have to bother.
Available in a variety of editions, Acronis True Image 2015 comes with the claim of being “the most complete, easy, and safe full system backup solution for personal use” while offering both dual protection (local and Cloud based) plus multi-platform (Windows and Mac) environments.  When installing Acronis True Image, the software conducts a search of your computer system for a previous version of the product.

An Instant Ink HP Device

Published in Printers/Scanners on 27 Nov 2014
With a new line up of inkjet printers, Hewlett Packard is not offering a new ink replacement service.
You might have seen the latest television advert from Hewlett-Packard.  This is the one regarding the company’s Instant Ink scheme which has just appeared as I write these words.  For those who have not seen the advert or are unsure as to what it may entail, the Instant Ink scheme offers to save the user up to 70% of the cost of ink when using an eligible printer.

Time for some Treasure Hunting

Published in Entertainment on 26 Nov 2014
As you would expect from a 4 Play title, this next offering considers of four games that have a treasure hunting theme.
Treasure Hunters is part of Avanquest’s 4 Play Collection series on its GSP label.  This title is made up of Time Chronicles The Missing Mona Lisa, Legacy of the Incas, Mystery of the Missing Brigantine and Treasure Hunters.  A front-end menu allows you to install each game individually.  You will need to restart this front-end after each of the installations has run its course which some might find a little annoying.

Gigaset QV830

Published in Entertainment on 25 Nov 2014
While an inch might be considered a small amount, it can make a difference with a portable device.
While the name of Gigaset might not be familiar to you, the company, in one format or another, has been in existence for 160 years in the telecommunications industry.  Previously known as Gigaset Siemens, the company has recently announced its first excursion into the area of tablets with its initial offerings consisting of two models namely the 8-inch QV830 and the 10.1-inch QV1030.  I have had the opportunity to try out the QV830.

Doro PhoneEasy 624

Published in Phones on 22 Nov 2014
Not everybody wants or needs a smartphone with all its “bells and whistles”. There are many users, especially those often referred to as “silver surfers”, who are more than happy to find their mobile communication needs adequately covered by a feature phone such as the latest addition to Doro’s growing 3G feature handset portfolio. This new addition to the Doro catalogue is the PhoneEasy 624 model.
With dimensions of 102 x 52 x 19mm and weighing 104g (800 mAh Li-ion battery included), the PhoneEasy 624 is a clamshell unit with a metallic red outer casing featuring white trimmings.  A charging stand, micro-to-standard USB lead, three-pin power plug, earphones with mute control, lanyard and User Manual are included in the box.

Multi-featured Speaker System

Published in Entertainment on 20 Nov 2014
The popular Ivy Restaurant was the location where I first cast eyes on the subject of this next review.
The CEOL Carino is a Denon audio system that has been designed to combine USB connectivity to a computer and Bluetooth streaming from a range of mobile devices when delivering its audio content.  Decked out in a fairly fingerprint resistant lacquered black (there is a white version), this kit consists of the main Carino box, two satellite speakers and a small remote control unit.

Watch Out! Ollie’s About.

Published in Misc on 19 Nov 2014
And who, you may ask is Ollie? And what is he about?
Let me introduce you to Ollie.  This fun creature is a close cousin of Sphero and Sphero 2.  Like his cousins, Ollie was developed in the Orbotix labs under the watchful eye of its co-creator Ian Bernstein who feels that this tubular creation should be regarded as the complete adrenaline junkie that is never happier than when charging about under some sort of control emanating from the user’s mobile device.
While colour can add impact, it is not always required by some documents. This next printer gives you speed and good quality for your monochrome documents.
While Brother is currently targeting the expanding Colour Laser market space with its “Now the Gloves are Off” campaign, the company is certainly not neglecting the monochrome market sector as can be seen by its new HL-L2365DW offering.  Aimed primarily at the Home and Small Office user, this monochrome laser printer offers a choice of USB, wired network or wireless connectivity with Duplex printing capability as the “DW” part of the product’s title indicates.

CorelDRAW Home & Student Suite X7

Published in Software on 15 Nov 2014
Although better known for its various graphics titles, some created in-house and other bought in, Corel does have another claim to fame. The company was responsible for helping kick-start the take up of the early optical drives as software quickly outgrew the available capacity of the floppy disks previously used for conveying commercial software, As a special promotion, Corel bundled a free CD drive with its CorelDRAW product. This was how I obtained my first CD drive.
Since those early days when CorelDRAW was the number one choice for both professional and amateur users, the playing field has changed with Adobe dominating the scene and relegating Corel to a more runner up position.  It is from the position of catch-up that Corel has released the latest edition of its CorelDRAW suite, namely version X7. The CorelDRAW Suite X7 is available in two versions.  There is the full commercial offering with a single installation priced at £479.

Extending Wi-Fi

Published in Wireless on 13 Nov 2014
Like big red buses that tend to turn up in pairs, no sooner do I complete my review of a wireless extender product than a similar product turns up.
While a Wi-Fi home network can provide you with a range of functions including the ability to stream data between systems, it can suffer from dead spots.  These are usually created by the basic infrastructure of the building in which the network is located.  Not surprisingly some companies have developed a possible solution to deal with the problem of dead areas.

A Golden Wake

Published in Entertainment on 12 Nov 2014
A trip back in time, both in the style of game play and the period setting, takes you off to America for this next title.
Developed as the result of collaboration between Grundislav Games and Wadjet Eye Games, is A Golden Wake.  This is a retro-styled adventure game that is set in America during the period that is known as the Roaring Twenties.  However, rather than the more popular locations of New York and Chicago associated with this period, the game takes you off to sunny Florida at an early stage of its development as a residential and tourist attractive.

Second Generation Moto G

Published in Phones on 11 Nov 2014
Ever since the original launch, my smartphone of choice has been the Motorola Moto G device which combines good performance with a reasonable price point. Motorola has recently upgrading this excellent handset with the new second generation version which is available in single or dual SIM flavours with a choice of either 8GB or 16GB. Also included with this second generation of the product is a micro SD card slot enabling the user to increase storage by a further 32GB.
When purchasing this new Moto G handset you have a choice of colours while Motorola has retained the customisation feature of replaceable back and flip type shells.  The new version of the Moto G is slightly larger at 70.7 x 141.5mm (W x H) than the original offerings 66 x 130mm (H x W).  As a result any peripherals, such as covers, from the original model will not fit with this all-new version. There is also an increase in the weight which rises by 6g up to 149g.

Dual Pairing Headset

Everybody enjoys their private moments and the next product allows you these moments when listening to your favourite music.
Available from Samsung, the SD590 takes a different approach to adjusting its settings.
While the model number of this next product, which is SD590, gives little away with regards to the functionality of this item, the tagline of “Minimalist design. Maximum vision” does provide a pointer as to what it might be.  This Samsung product is a 24-inch LED monitor offering the user a choice D-SUB or dual HDMI connectivity.  My review sample was supplied with a HDMI lead and a two-piece power lead.

Visions of Time

In this next game you play not one but two different characters with one investigating the other.
Mystery Agency: Visions of Time is a Hidden Object Adventure game available on Avanquest’s GSP label.  Before embarking on this Hidden Object Adventure game, developed by Cranberry Productions, you can make various adjustments that include the volume levels of music and sound effects plus whether to play in full screen mode.  This game has two difficulty levels referred to as Beginner and Pro while those with an understanding of German can play the game in that language.
Adding to its range of multifunction inkjet device, Canon has developed its PIXMA MG6650 model.
The Canon PIXMA MG6650 is a multifunction device offering print, scan and copy capabilities.  When connection this device to a computer system you have the choice of USB, wired or wireless connectivity with the access points for the first two being located at the rear of the unit.  The rear also houses the mains power connection which is recessed into the body of the device.

Published in Entertainment on 1 Nov 2014
This next product could give you the opportunity to improve your street cred as you wear a music output device on your hip.
Unlike the other speaker units in the Jam range from HMDX that I have looked at in the past, this next offering has been designed specifically for use outdoors as you “strut your stuff” when out and about.  The product in question is entitled the Jam Street.  This is a wireless tubular stereo speaker unit. With dimensions of 2,5 x 1.8 x 6.
