hp photosmart c4280 all in one printe

HP Photosmart C4280

Published in Printers/Scanners on 26 Sep 2007
This All In One product is small and when closed will probably be inoffensive enough to get past the lady of the houses ‘lounge patrol’.
The is cream with a grey lid and input tray. This is a four ink (two cartridge) solution. The dimensions are 42x26x16cm when closed the front folds down to form the paper input tray and this adds 15cm to the 26cm depth when A4 paper is stored in it (face down) the printed pages are delivered face up just above this. There are nine buttons in a row on the left edge and a small 3x2.
This AIO (all in one) product also has the ability to be totally hidden, not that it is ugly but ladies often decree no printers in the lounge so this can live in a cupboard somewhere without any wires trailing from the PC as it is wireless.
First the dimensions of the when closed but power lead and USB (if used) is plugged in 45x37x16cm. Now with paper stored in the rear vertical position and the output tray lowered these figures become 45x52x38cm that is the actual amount of desk, shelf or floor space it will require. The scanning lid is landscape and items easily inserted whilst it is still far lower than the height required for A4 paper in the input storage tray.

Wedgits and I-CY

Published in Entertainment on 23 Sep 2007
Two vastly different toys one for the very young and one for the ‘boy or girl’ in us all. Firstly Wedgits some blocks that build into so many shapes. Then i-Penguin (I-CY) the follow up to the amazing i-Dog.
Wedgits Normally I tend to avoid toys for the very young, but I found this set of blocks fascinating not least because of the range of objects that can be constructed with the 15 Wedgits that the junior set contains.

Dragon 9.5 Wireless

Published in Software on 21 Sep 2007
This Nuance software is now Vista compatible and the version I am looking at here comes with a wireless (DECT) headset that works superby.
My is over a year old but only now have I managed to get hold of the version that I requested at the launch of the product that the demonstrator walked up and down the large room whilst demonstrating, true Wireless technology using a DECT headset.

Olympus DS-50 Voice Recorder

Published in Misc on 19 Sep 2007
Since I last looked at a voice recorder they have come a very long way, no tapes now they have built in memory and the sound quality is light years away from what it was.
There are in fact three different machines the DS-30, DS-40 and the top of the range DS50. They are different colours and the size of the built in memory varies. Whichever one you get they all record in WMA but to avoid death by initials I will just say you can pick recording rates from the worst LP 8kHz (8kbps) up to STXQ 44.1kHz (128kbps).

V7 22inch Panel

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 17 Sep 2007
A name I only heard about through a third party, they are a company big in Germany and they have distributors in the UK.
This V7 L22WD is a 22 inch panel that has built in speakers. The screen is 50x36x6cm. The last dimension the width is the maximum as at the edges it is only half that. The stand raises it 6cm above the desk and is 19x25cm. It is matt black with a silver/grey band round the edge of the screen that matches the stand. The dimensions around the outside of the viewable area of the screen are 47x29.5cm giving the 22inch diagonal measurement.

Quality Wooden Puzzles

Published in Entertainment on 16 Sep 2007
These puzzles are not cheap but as with most quality items you do pay a premium for the finish. Certainly these puzzles while playable by children are probably more suitable for adults as the logic required requires study and thought.
Here I am looking at two items sold in the UK by Coiledspring Games and in a few weeks two further offerings from them. Mini Pylos This consists of a 17cm square wooden board with 16 indentations (four x four) in the central portion and a gulley running around the four sides a cloth bag containing fifteen cherry red balls and fifteen creamy/yellow balls, finally two sides of a forty eight page multi language rule book that are in English.
There are lots of VOIP and Skype phones out there and without the supplied software this is just another (albeit stylish) phone. However add the software and the phone is no longer a ‘dummy’.
This Lindy USB Skype handset is a two piece offering black predominately with a red stripe down each side of the top part and a red underneath for the base part. It can be wall mounted or sit on your desk. The base is a maximum of 18x5.5x3.5cm (there is a 1cm difference between the front and the back. The top part is 18x4x1cm and slightly curved so it feels good when up to the ear.

HP Pavilion Slimline S3050

Published in Printers/Scanners on 12 Sep 2007
Certainly this tower case is tiny, however it does not mean that there is a lack of connectivity within.
It is 33x26x10cm however to insert various leads in the back you will need to add another 5cm to the 33cm depth. No monitor or panel is supplied as standard but it is supplied with a DVI to Analog converter should you use an Analog monitor/panel. It has an Intel Viiv Core 2 Duo processor E4300. This seemed to handle everything I asked it to do without problem.

Bush DAB (TR4DABBLK) Digital Radio

Published in Wireless on 10 Sep 2007
With not only the better reception but also certain radio stations only available on DAB now could be a great time to purchase a DAB radio, here one with a retro feel.
On first glance this looks like a Bush radio I owned very many years ago however do not let that turn you away from what it has to offer. To begin with it is stereo where a lot of DAB offerings only have a single internal speaker. It is a mains/battery offering and is 31x10x20cm to the top of the carrying handle. It has a 50cm five piece rod aerial.

Wheeler Dealer

Published in Entertainment on 9 Sep 2007
This is another board game that will be a big hit at Christmas, I saw it last January at the Toy Fair and now – with our wonderful summer – I have played a number of games of it.
With this product the good news starts -assuming you buy it in a store - before you open the box as all you really need to know is printed on the back of the box. It has 'small pieces' so is unsuitable for the under threes. A game should take around 90 minutes so don't start playing if it is not a suitable timescale.

Evesham Voyager C515SR

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 7 Sep 2007
Evesham is one of the more popular makes of notebook. Here I am looking at what probably qualifies as a mid range offering but it still manages to support Windows Vista Premium.
First the all important dimensions it is 35x25x4cm and weights around 2.7kilos. It is traditional black apart from the silver-grey lid. It has surprisingly few ports, the rear has 2xUSB2 ports and the power brick input. The right side has 2xUSB2 ports and the DVD multi recorder. The front has microphone, earbud and SPDIF sockets and a card port (SD and MS). The left side has PCMCIA slot, Ethernet and modem ports as well as external monitor port.

JVC Everio G Camcorder (GZ-MG155)

Published in Cameras on 5 Sep 2007
I remember seeing a very early Everio it did not have a hard disc but a MicroDrive I believe 4GB was possible. Here it has a full blown hard disc at 30GB that allows up to 37 hours recording.
Of course you would need numerous batteries to fill the disk on the new in one session. However for most I suspect two would be enough. As for the 37 hours I would not be happy with that high a compression for anything important. The best quality -super fine- gives just over 7 hours. I also found the -fine- at 10.5hours quite acceptable for most uses. To say a camcorder can fit into a pocket maybe a slight exaggeration but it is small at 11x6x6.5cm and the weight is only around 350grams.

Casio Watches

Published in Misc on 3 Sep 2007
Apart from Cameras and Keyboards Casio also make watches and here I am looking at two from different ranges both of which are new to the market.
G-Shock (G-011D-4AVER) Certainly a 'man's' watch and as supplied it is for a man with a large wrist. I worked out that I would need to remove four links to get it to fit my not that delicate wrist. It is also quite weighty at around 150grams. The model I have is chrome with a nearly square orange dial. It has hands but in truth is still a digital watch.

Take it to the Limit

Published in Entertainment on 2 Sep 2007
It’s not just winter that is good for games, here is one of the offerings that could be a big seller this Christmas that I saw at the Toy Fair last January. Perhaps a more responsible offering than ‘In The Drink’.
Certainly not a game to attempt after you have had a few as it requires thought. It is for 1-6 players and is stated to be for age 10+. However the game played by the solo person is somewhat different to that when played by 2-6 players. Not an easy game to describe, in fact it is possibly easier to play than describe. Each player has a board to place their six sided pieces on.

Headsets without Wires

Published in Entertainment on 31 Aug 2007
Two headsets for different purposes, one from Microsoft that was originally developed for X-Box use and the second from Jabra that is designed to fit onto a car sun visor.
Microsoft LifeChat ZX-6000 This device was first created for use with a X-Box but have been given a new life to work with a PC. It is stated to work with all flavours of XP or Vista. The base station fits in any USB port it is 6.5x4x1.5cm and it has a 1.7metre lead. The earpiece is chunky by comparison to some but it is comfortable to wear.
olympus e 500 digital slr camer

Olympus E-500

Published in Cameras on 29 Aug 2007
The Olympus E-500 is a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera and I was sent it with a couple of lenses, the first a macro lens great for those close ups and the send a more general 14-45mm offering.
Perhaps a camera those who come from a 35mm background would fall in love with, mainly because they are used to making decisions that the modern digital photographer either does not make or does not have to make. However the 'Auto' mode is there but it still requires some work with the lens that a standard digital camera does not. As with most SLR cameras what you normally get is just the body.
Having recently looked at two offering from Kensington here are the latest two Diamond Eye offerings to land on my desk, just like the last pair one needs the industrial scissors.
Kensington Ci60 Optical Wireless Mouse Nothing more difficult than a stubborn piece of sellotape stopped me from finding the contents of the box, the mouse proudly protruding through the plastic window on the face. Should you ever need to replace the mouse in it's packaging it's possible and because of this you have a good chance of finding the instruction sheet and CD.

Learn Windows Vista & Office

Published in Software on 26 Aug 2007
This PC Tutor package comes on four CD’s and takes you from the absolute beginning along a journey to understanding Microsoft Vista as well a Microsoft Office.
As stated it is four CD's and there is an awful lot of information on them. In total there is 2.3GB of information and while the majority is for the novice user it is not generic. By that I mean Office 2003 has totally different files to Office 2007. The installer is on the first CD and once installed (less than 13MB) it tells you which CD to insert for which course.
Here the word portable means no mains and not just with a 15x10cm offering. So for anyone needing to produce documents while away from mains power this is it. It is a product that Canon have successfully produced in various forms for years.
This latest incarnation of the is a little larger simply because the battery fits in an attachment at the rear. The overall dimensions with the battery extension attached at the rear are 31x20x5cm and the weight is such it could easily fit into a bag to be carried around. However in it's 'mobile' life I would expect it would live in a car as a mobile office for people who need to produce quotes and invoices on the move.

Archos 704 Mobile DVR

Published in Entertainment on 22 Aug 2007
I was always amazed why Archos needed such an array of leads and now my flabber is totally gasped as for all (or most) of the things you want to do you need another separate product.
It should be possible to import via the supplied dual USB/charger lead most AVI files however one recent digital camera takes a default of 800x600 and these files when imported are shown as too big. If I record in 640x480 these are correctly imported using Windows Media Player 10 but the sound is lost during importation.

Sidekick 3 from T-Mobile

Published in Mobile Tech on 20 Aug 2007
For those readers of shall we say ‘more mature years’ you will remember Sidekick as perhaps the first PIM (Personal Information Manager) product on the market, here it forms part of a mobile phone offering from T-Mobile.
This is neither small or light - if that's what you want T-Mobile have lots of other units - this is a PIM that allows you easy Internet access and collection of emails oh and just for good measure you can make phone calls and text messages etc. It is 13cm long, 6cm wide and close to 2.

In The Drink from JR Sports

Published in Entertainment on 19 Aug 2007
This has been waiting to be reviewed since the Toy Fair in January and now with the sometimes warmer weather it seems a good time for some friends to indulge in drinking games.
It is sold as a game for 18+ but there is no need for the drinks to be alcoholic and indeed which drink is downed is as a result of a dice throw. So sensible adults or younger people could have a great game without ending up drunk and incapable. For two to eight players but I found in my tests that it performed best with at least four as the repartee was as least part of the fun.

HP w2007v 20 inch Panel

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 17 Aug 2007
This is a slim sleek looking 20 inch panel however maybe not all is as it should be even if the image it gives is clear and crisp even at the end of a long day.
First the all important dimensions, the outer measurements of the screen are 48x31.5cm with the stand raising it 8cm above the desk. The viewable screen size is 43x27.5cm giving the diagonal screen measurement of 20.1 inches. The base is 26x18cm and is a silver/grey colour. The screen surround is black with a 2.5cm silver/ grey band. HP W2007V The screen have a good range of tilt both back and forward from vertical.
This is a surround sound speaker that can be used indoor or outdoor and while it is not intended to get wet it can – I am told – withstand the odd shower, also it can run on batteries or mains.
It looks a bit like a garden sprayer or even one of the pull along type vacuum cleaners on it's end - however it is a single speaker that radiates surround sound. It's overall dimensions are 40cm tall, 22cm wide and 20cm deep. In fact it is nearly circular in shape. The overall weight (without the power brick) is around 2.4 kilos and is easy to move. All the controls are sealed so the odd light shower it should survive.

Samsung L74 Wide Digital Camera

Published in Cameras on 13 Aug 2007
This is totally different from almost any other digital camera I have reviewed as almost all the settings are adjusted from the TFT touchscreen, certainly a first for me.
The is a maximum of 10x6x3cm and weights just on 200grams. It is black and always feels cold as the casing is metal the one strange looking item is the wrist strap hole that looks as if it was attached on the right side as an afterthought. Samsung L74 The rear is dominated by the 6x4.5cm display (this gives the 3 inch diagonal measurement) apart from this the rear has the telephoto/wide angle rocker and two buttons near the base.

Book and Slippers

Published in Entertainment on 12 Aug 2007
Mid summer may seem a strange time for slippers but with recent cold wet spell they are very acceptable and a good book is always something whether in the garden of the armchair.
Slippies from Gizoo To call these slippers is a slight misnomer. They fit on the feet but walking in them is not easy - nor encouraged - as they do not have non slip soles. The contents of the sole is a flaked substance and will often move to one end. However after a couple of minutes of wear it redistributes about the base. They are microwaveable and frezzeable dependant on the weather.
pure talksport dab radi

Pure One talkSport DAB Radio

Published in Entertainment on 10 Aug 2007
This is a DAB/FM unit produced in conjunction with talkSPORT and I believe exclusively in Black. However don’t worry if your not a sport fanatic all other DAB and FM stations are available.
This can be used away from mains either with 6x'C' cell batteries or the Pure ChargePAK that once installed will be automatically charged while run from mains, in previous tests I got around ten hours of use between charges using one.  The dimensions of the are 21x14x6cm and it weights around 1.2kilos with batteries. The left half of the front is a speaker grill the speaker behind it is around 6cm round.

HP TouchSmartPC IQ770

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 8 Aug 2007
This must be considered to be a cross between a desktop and a tablet PC with the built in touch screen being the part like a tablet. However overall it is certainly not a mobile offering. The Vista speed rating is 4.6
HP are often at the forefront of design and innovation and while this features several features new to me I am not sure the format is quite right. The comes with lots of memory and a large hard disc but it also is slow to shutdown and very slow to boot up. Graphics are good and watching a DVD is a nice experience.
Continuing my series of 32 and 37 inch TV’s here is the latest offering from Toshiba that has full HD abilities but does it come at a detriment to standard TV broadcasts?
First the all important dimensions, the is 91.5x66x12cm on it's stand. The screen surround is 91.5x60cm with the viewable screen 82.5x46.5cm giving the diagonal inch measurement. For those needing to move it the weight is around 20kilos. It is described as gloss black but while the screen surrounds are black the speaker grill below the screen is grey and the various controls under that are silver grey to match the 'C' shape stand.
