Do you have hard water from your tap? It is especially hard in the area I live in. So being able to filter the water you drink is important. The filter removes lots of different items that arrive in your cup/glass if you drink direct from the tap.

The unit is 26cm tall, 25cm from front to back and 11cm wide. It can hold up to 5 pints (2.8 litres) of water.

When you open the box you have the main unit, the top, the lid and the filter. There is a ‘Quick Guide’ but the assembly guide could be better and I tried – unsuccessfully – to put the top in the wrong way but this would mean that water would take many hours to get into the unit instead of a few minutes. However if you look closely at the vertical column of four illustrations it does become clear.

There is a TDS Tester provided and this can fit into the outside of the handle so it does not get lost. This is 14x2x1.5cm; there is a 2x.7cm window on the front with on/off and hold buttons below.

Put some tap water in a cup and press the on/off button it will then give a reading. My tap reading is over 200, once the water has passed through the units filter repeat the exercise and it will read 0. You should replace the units filter when the reading is above 6.

In my tests with a different unit this rise from 0 to 6 took several months and as they both use the same TDS Tester I would expect a similar time frame. But this would depend how often you fill the unit I fill mine around three times a week.

The Quick Guide has 16 pages in English and page two covers the setting up and the majority of the rest goes into lots of details about the filter.

The filter has five stages as the water passes through it; Stage 1 filters fine particles and sediment. Stage 2 filters suspended solids. Stage 3 filters organic contaminants and stops bacteria from forming. Stage 4 filters inorganic compounds, metals and non-metals. Stage 5 Filters Ultra –fine particles.

There are more details but probably best not to know what else may lurk in your tap water.

There is a simple pull forward tap just above the base of the unit or you can tip the unit up to pour larger quantities.

If like me you live in a hard water area and have lead pipes then something like this is a must.

At the time of publication the Zero Water 2.8 litre filter is available from Amazon priced at  £44.99.
