Return to Angkor

The people of Angkor need your help to stop a volcano from erupting and destroying their homes.

How would you save an ancient temple from the threat of a volcanic eruption?  According to Ironcode Gaming, this task will require you to complete 100 levels of Match 3 game play as you take on the challenge of Angkor - Volcano Verge.  This particular game, which is available in a choice of English, French or German. allows adjustment to be made to sound effects, background music plus the graphics quality (fast or high), challenge level (casual or expert), limit (endless or with time or move restriction).

Match 3 game play provides the main source of action.  A centrally positioned grid will be overlaid against a backdrop of the countryside featuring a pair of volcanoes dominating the scene.  Sometimes the grid will cover a single area but there will be times when it is broken up into sections which you will need to find the required route to travel between areas.

Occupying most of the cells within the grid will be rune embossed tiles that feature different attributes to be applied during the game.  In many cases you will be able to clear these runes by the usual method of swapping two adjacent tiles and thus creating a group of three or more similar tiles which then disappear to be replaced by other tiles falling downwards.

However problems can exist as certain tiles will need to be tackled in different ways.  A Dynamite tile can only be removed by dropping a heavy weight on it while a lock tiles will need to be cleared by being paired with a key that can unlock nearby tiles.  One particular tile that tended to frustrate me was the Achilles Heal tile.  This tile can only be removed when it is approached from one certain direction as it was fully protected on its other three sides.

When required some additional assistance can be provided with the removal of certain tiles.  Whenever you manage to create a group with four or more tiles then you will be rewarded with a bomb tile which can prove useful in clearing hard to get at tiles that might be blocking your progress.

The individual levels of the game are linked together with some cut-scenes which advance the story line as work continues in the background to avoid the forthcoming Volcano eruption.  You will also be given a break from grid clearing action with the occasional appearance of a mini game puzzle.  You could be asked to complete a jigsaw puzzle of a scene relevant to the story or solve a slider puzzle as you recreate a scene.  Other types of puzzle might involve playing a hand of solitaire, play a memory game as you mach face-down cards or join together a collection of pipes to link a source and destination points.

While an enjoyable playing experience, I did feel that some of the levels of Match 3 game play did tend to vary somewhat in their level of difficulty.  You can download this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99 or Big Fish Games priced at £7.38.  The game calls for a 1.6 GHz processor with 2048MB of RAM and 281MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
