Philips AirFryer XXL

Over the years I have reviewed a couple of earlier – and smaller – versions of this item. When I saw this at the recent Philips demonstration day ‘Xmas In July’ the claim was made that it could cook a whole chicken in a small amount of time so never one to turn down a challenge I accepted.

As stated this is somewhat larger than previous versions but is still small enough to sit on the average kitchen worktop it is 43cm from back to front, 30cm from side to side and 29cm tall.

Unlike other Air Fryers the whole fryer can be extracted on runners so if you wish you can baste the item being cooked without having to hold the cooking basket in on hand or perhaps harder finding somewhere to put it down that can withstand heat.

There is a finned piece of metal that can be placed in the base of the basket to take fat away from the item you are cooking.

Returning to my challenge a 1200 gram chicken - the smallest you find in most supermarkets - cooks in 50 minutes larger ones take longer. Perhaps most important is how it tasted and I was perfectly happy, it was still juicy but even at the thickest part there was no blood.

Most other things like chops, sausages, fish, chips and potato wedges all can be cooked as they could in the smaller Air Fryer units. It is also possible to cook bread!!!

Very little fat or oil is required in the cooking, this is NOT a deep or even a shallow fat fryer and items cook by hot air and the only oil required is for a glaze.

I found it reached the required temperature far quicker than with other units and by having the basket on runners you did not need to carry out a juggling act to remove or check items.

While there is a full colour receipt book in three languages with English first the instruction manual is one of those huge fold out sheets that rely on understanding illustrations. However there is a good .PDF manual online which is certainly worth downloading.

A lot of new homes do not have a conventional kitchen so no oven, possibly not even a microwave so the Air Fryer XXL could be a good solution.

The turbo air circulation means that items cook evenly in hot air so not stewed and edges become crisp. The extra size of the Air Fryer XXL means that a chicken is easily accommodated and for those living alone ideal for the whole meal being prepared in the basket once you calculate what takes the longest.

So not only can you roast you can also grill fry and bake.

The Philips Air Fryer XXL is available from Amazon for £259 including free delivery.
