Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

This can be considered two phones in one, ‘folded’ it’s a little narrow compared to most recent offering, ‘unfolded’ you need large hands or a flat surface to lay it on. Having told you about the Samsung Flip last year here is its big brother the Samsung Fold.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 measures 15.5x6.5x1.2cm folded and when opened it is 15.5x12.5x.7cm it weighs 273grams. The stated figures say you have a 7.6 inch main display and a 6.2 inch closed display.

The right side has volume rocker with on/off button below it. The base has USB ‘C’ microphone and speaker. The left side is the hinge; the top has microphone and speaker. The right side of the other half has the SIM entry point. So now with the unit closed the back has the units three cameras in a vertical line .5cm in and .5cm down from the top left with the LED flash below the three lenses.

When in fold mode it shows two lines of four icons, open it and you get two lines of six icons. In either mode the Google bar is above the icons and above that the weather.

The top line is the normal time on the left and reception, battery state on the right.

In either mode a swipe up with your finger takes you from the screen described to all the rest of your icons swipe up again to return to the first screen.

The default of all open screens, home and back is at the base of the screen or the base of the right screen.

Anything that requires the onscreen keyboard is a little different. When in the closed mode the keyboard shows fully with each numeral of letter being .5cm square, unfold and the keyboard is in two parts with numerals 1 to 5 and associated lower letters on the left and 6 to 0 and associated lower letters on the right with a blank area of up to 3.5cm between the two parts. I found this strange and did most of my typing in the closed mode.

Using the camera I found easiest in the closed mode as whatever screen is available shows what the camera sees. When in the unfolded mode it saves part of the screen to show what you have just captured and for me anyway detracts from the image of video you are currently trying to capture.

Images and videos captured were fine either way.

The unit sent to me was black but it is also available in green or silver.

All three cameras are 12MP they are ultra-wide, wide angle and telephoto. It has 2x optical zoom.

The battery is stated to be 4400mAh. It has 25w fast charging and 10w wireless charging.

It comes with 256GB internal storage and 12GB RAM.

In my tests it was different to all other phones even the Flip that I reviewed 6-12-21.

The Fold is available from Vodafone on various plans, one is £49 upfront and £51 monthly

Or is available SIM free from Amazon for £1699.
