Brother All In One MFC-J895DW

In the case of this unit it is a four in one device as not only does it print, scan and copy but it also has fax capability and while this may not be required by the majority it is certainly used by my health centre to send urgent prescriptions to chemists.

The Brother MFC-J895DWmeasures 39x34x17cm. You would need around another 14cm onto the second figure the depth for paper output and another 5cm onto the last figure to insert sheets in the feeder mechanism to scan, however this unit is perfectly flat on top when the scanner unit is closed so as we also know any flat surface in the office is useful to put things on. The total weight is 8.5kilos so if on a shelf make sure it is strong enough.

Like so many things today the software needs to be downloaded and in this case the basic software is around 415MB so only a problem for those with slow connections, it took around 6 minutes for me and the total install including the additional fax software took around 25 minutes.

You have the choice of Wi-Fi, USB or Ethernet and just for a change I choose the last mentioned easy enough assuming it finds the unit which it did for me, there is online help available for those times when it is not found.

This is a light grey box with a black central display unit and paper tray.

The mains lead enters left side near the back and the USB or Ethernet cable uses the Brother method of entering back right and connecting front right inside the unit which could mean you needing either a longer Ethernet or USB to complete the installation than would otherwise be required.

The 5.5x4.5cm display is touch but easy enough to use with care unless you have very large fingers.

The default three options are Fax, Scan and Copy with the right arrow producing another three options including printing from mobile devices and then one more option on the third screen.

Time from off at the machine is four seconds. To the right of the touch screen are Back, Home and Cancel buttons to the right of this is an on/off button with green LED above, this panel can be viewed flat to the front of the unit or in any of three raised from the bottom positions the highest of these is 45%.

Normally a fax works when in full or low power but Brother recognise there will be times you want to switch all features off but you are warned of this when you press the off button.

This is a four ink unit and can be used for both general office work and better quality printing, there is a single paper tray at the base stated to hold up to 100 sheets this to me anyway seems optimistic I was happiest with half that figure.

For scanning there is a twenty page ADF (auto document feeder) and duplex is also available.

It has NFC (near field communication) useful for mobiles etc. There is a USB port and an SD card slot for direct image printing.

The stated maximum print speed is 10PPM mono and 8PPM colour.

Copying can be set from the unit and both reduction and enlargement are available.

The Brother MFC-J895DW is available from Amazon for £115,
