OmniPage 18

A lot of software products are now in their mature stage especially when the number gets to double figures. In the case of OmniPage it probably means it’s been around for around twenty years, so surely it should do things right?

Often software was judged by the weight and size of the box here its smaller than a book and the contents consist of a single A4 sheet of paper folded into four ‘notes before installing’ in six languages and a CD-ROM with the program and manuals. The box with contents weigh just over 50 grams that’s less than a small letter.

The installation on a recent Windows 7 Notebook took 17 minutes; the first 7 minutes were installing various Microsoft bits such as Visual C++ and Net Framework before you get to start installing OmniPage 18 and Cloud Connector Files. In all it took 2.36GB of hard disc space, one thing is certain the software certainly gets larger.

Once the program opens another screen overlays it called the ‘Start Page’ while the basic choices are Open File, Scan Document and Digital. There are then twelve extra workflows available from the Getting Started Tab.

I found it interesting that Cloud Connector creates a Desktop Icon where the actual program does not do so by default.

The stated minimum is Windows XP a GHz Processor, 1024x768 display, 512MB RAM and 250MB of hard disc space.

OmniPage claims to be ‘World’s No. 1 Scanning and OCR software’ this is probably true as it has bought several of its competitors over the years. It is a very full featured package and I will tell you about some of the new features.

The last link at the foot of the review gives a lot of % figures which of course only mean something when compared but they look impressive.

The Start Page is a big plus but for the novice being able to convert from ‘x’ to ‘y’ without knowing how to is a big plus.

For those who use Outlook as their email then with OmniPage you can automatically have it open and convert it.

eDiscovery assistant is searchable PDF, meaning that you can look through PDF files that can be many pages long for a phrase or reference this can be across a range of PDF files and not just a single file saving much time.

The Cloud Connector has already been mentioned above and this enables you to take files from Evernote or the very popular Dropbox allowing synchronization and backup again with very little knowledge required by the user.

Everyone knows the basic good image in good OCR out, but OmniPage can when the original image is not that good.

Perhaps the most exciting for those who get files in numerous languages is the automatic language detection feature.

Often when a file is printed there are blank pages printed simply because the scanned image is not perfect and if nothing else this wastes paper.

OnmiPage 18 is available from the first link below for £82.99 or from second link as a download for £79.99.

I am a novice user of OCR software. I previously used TextBridge 2000 without any problem as it was intuitive to use. TextBridge became part of Nuance but cannot be used with Windows 7. On the strength of my previous experience I decided to opt for Omnipage 18 pc owing to its pedigree and favorable reviews. I have spent many hours trying to use it but with little success. The help files are anything but helpful. All I want to do is know how to scan a page retaining its original formatting, OCR save and print it. Its not much to ask. Is there anyone out there who can help? I live in the Kingston Surrey area is there any place nearby where I can get help and perhaps some tuition?
