Samsung Series 7 40 inch TV

Reviewing a quality TV is always a pleasure it means my elderly 32inch offering can have a rest. This 40inch offering is just about the perfect size for my lounge and while exploring its secrets from my sofa I am still technically working.

40inch is now considered a small size and having seen an 85inch offering at a recent event I can agree although that would take up a whole wall in most rooms and make a large five figure dent in your bank balance.

4K down your aerial is not going to happen anytime soon, yes it can on satellite and on downloads but not down an aerial so surely for now get the best aerial option you can afford.

It is 91x52.5x3.5cm, the last figure may increase a little with various leads inserted. As with all recent TV’s you can hang it on a wall but until most get bigger TV’s I continue to use the stand provided and the size of this makes a huge difference to the size of the unit it needs to sit on. A single middle support will always be deeper but most recent offerings have either a pair of supports placed near the ends or a single rectangle that runs nearly the whole length of the unit, here it is 90cm from anchor to anchor with the part that must be grounded 50cm long and 20cm deep. Finally the area around the screen is 1cm top and sides and 1.5cm at the bottom.

This unit can connect to cable or aerial, I used the latter and a full Digital scan took only 45 seconds and found 101 TV, 26 Radio and 19 Other channels.

It can view 3D and the required glasses are provided. As with the majority of current TVs the resolution is 1920x1080. This is an LED TV.

A manual is provided and setup is straightforward apart from the numerous screws needed to connect the stand to the TV, the overall weight is not great and I managed the assembly by myself but I am sure health and safety would suggest two people to put it in position.

As with the majority of recent units it can show mobile content.

Looking at the back there are the following connections in a line down the right side slightly inset, three USB, two HDMI, two satellite and an aerial socket. On a panel in the back five centimetres further in two more HDMI sockets a SCART socket, various optical connections and a line of sockets for component connections. At the other side of the back the two pin power in connected. There are no controls on the TV a small red LED comes on near the junction with the right side on the base when power is connected to the unit.

So everything is down to the 44key remote control so do not lose it of let the dog chew it up. All the buttons are clearly marked and once into the top level of menus everything flows to find the section you want.

Unlike the last Samsung unit I reviewed this one does have an active picture in picture display.

Picture quality is fine and there is plenty of contrast available, sound is adequate unless you are watching some movies where as with almost all sound it would be improved by a sound bar and Samsung do plenty of those. The thinness of the TV means speakers always suffer.

The Samsung UE40H7000STXXU is available from either of the first two links below for £799.
