Olympus LS-P4

This is a voice and audio recorder from Olympus who while they are probably best known for high end cameras also do extremely good voice/audio recorders so any new device from Olympus be in photographic or audio is always of great interest.

The Olympus LS-P4 is called a Videographer Kit. I am surprised my spell checker did not have a fit over Videographer a clever word new to me but one that describes it use very well for a photographer who wants top quality sound. This with the right camera taking video would give excellent results far better than what was the option a few years ago a Camcorder.

The recording unit is 11x4x1.5cm and weighs only 75grams with the supplied ‘AAA’ rechargeable battery inserted.

Going around the sides of the unit there are two 3.5mm sockets on the right side for headphones/earbuds and for external microphone. The base has a belt clip and the exit point for USB, this is covered to avoid any possible interference when not being used.

The left side has two slider actions the lower one to deliver the USB connector and the upper one to turn the unit on/off and when on a raise up position to hold the unit and stop it accidently being turned off. The top has two microphones set at 90 degrees apart, between these a third centre microphone set to go straight ahead and help with bass notes. The back has the connection point for the fixing mentioned below. Finally for the box contents a 24 language Basic Manual with the first twelve sides in English, but this has all the information required to get you started.

Also in the box are a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead of 25cm length. A two part fixing that will attach to a camera shoe and a wind muffler to fit over the microphones.

With the current pandemic my tests were in the home and my garden, I managed to find a windy day and the wind muffler certainly helped reduce noise.

Normally with such devices I use one of several local venues to capture a gig or three be it trio, quartet or larger group, sadly this was not possible at the moment and even when we return to ‘normality’ there is still ‘social distancing’ to overcome. However it did mean that talking with my neighbours in normal voice was caught effectively even at two metres or more. The Zoom mode can work over even longer distances.

The sound capture frequency range goes from 20Hz to 20kHz.

Not only can you transfer by the USB connection built in but also Bluetooth.

Should you wish you can transfer music to the device and play OTG.

The inbuilt memory is 8GB – this can capture over 250 hours of MP3 at 320kbps – but the device also supports a Micro SD card up to 32GB.

At the time of publication the Olympus LS-P4 voice recorder is available from Amazon for £141 including free delivery. More details are available on the Olympus web site.
