Developed by Kasual Kode, Gem Tales is a Match 3 game that invites you to take a journey through the land of Tara with its magical and mystical hills decorating the landscape. During this journey, which is spread over 100 levels of Match 3 action, you will be cast in the role of Luna, She is a young member of the family who has been tasked with being a Crystal Keeper. It is this Crystal and the power it contains that ensures the balance to provide the harmony that brings peace to the land of Tara and its many residents.
When entering the land of Tara, you can make certain adjustments to its playing environment. You can set volume levels for background music and sound effects. With a full screen viewing aspect, you can set graphics to be of Fast or High quality. The game can be played in Casual or Expert challenge mode in a choice of Endless, Timed or Move limited mode and use a custom cursor with on-screen help turned on. Versions of the game are available in English. French or German.
The Match 3 element used in this title makes use of the standard method of clearing the content of the grid by swapping two adjacent tiles to create a group of three or more which then disappears. Along with the standard types of tiles and features, Gem Tales uses a mixture of additional tiles and attributes. You could encounter an infinite exploder, lava tiles, fire source, dart thrower and Achilles Heel tile to hinder and assist your progress.
Providing assistance in the removal of standard tiles and the enhanced tiles are features such as a bomb, key to unlock areas, column or row destroyers, a weight to activate dynamite plus a button to change the content of an area. You also get a rechargeable Hint feature, Hammer and Shuffle power-up tools to use when required
As you progress through the different Match 3 levels, you will be faced by an occasional mini game puzzle. This puzzle could involve a Hidden Object scene, linking pipes between the source and destination points of a water flow, play a hand of Solitaire or complete a jigsaw. You also get cut-scenes at various points as the story line advances as Luna meets a talkative creature and learns more about the sacred crystals songs that are found within Tara.
