A Gilded Rose

Elephant Games has continued its Cursed Fables series with "A Gilded Rose". This particular episode in the series is based on the story that follows the chaos caused by a masquerade ball held so that the prince could select which of the princesses from a neighbouring Kingdoms should be his bride.

However before he could make his decision, he was turned into a monster.  As the newly appointed Court Sorceress, the blame for this transformation falls on you and leaves you no choice but to discover the real culprit and put matters right. In your role as the sorceress Margaret you will need to work through three chapters covering the main story and a bonus chapter that form this title.

Your opening to this adventure that will follow starts with an optional tutorial which will introduce the features usually found in this type of game as the mouse cursor changes shape to indicate when different actions are possible.  Running across the bottom of the well-drawn and animated scenes, that we have come to expect from Elephant Games, will be tools that consist of a Map, Tasks, Inventory, Strategy Guide and a Hint feature that needs to be recharged after use.  Any item displayed in the game, whether in the inventory or elsewhere, accompanied with a gear symbol will require some work before use.

The game begins, as mentioned earlier, when the Kingdom's prince attends the masked ball to select his forthcoming bride.  The choice is due to be made from the gathered Princess Anna, Beatrix and Elisabeth.  But before the announcement can be made, a sip of water, supplied by your good self, causes a dramatic change in the prince's appearance.

You then need to set out and explore various location to discover the truth of whoever is behind this plot to cause problems between the different kingdoms and start a war.  Your exploration of the kingdom's castle reveals that the transformation that has just occurred does not just apply to the prince but various scenes also seem to suffer from a higgledy-piggledy make-over to their appearance.

After managing to escape from the prison into which you have been incarcerated, you will receive help from a friendly ghost   You will also need to make use of your ability to gather the ingredients, such as various herbs and the tears of the Bird of Truth, to create potions.  The result of such action will eventually reveal the real culprit and the reason for the plot.

Mixed in with these types of tasks, you will need to solve mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play.  Mini game action will often involve adjusting and the repositioning of segments to restore a scene or rearranging a selection of items.  Hidden Object game play, indicated by an outbreak of sparkles, varies between using text, silhouettes or part of the scene to list the required items concealed with a scene or book page.

You can download Cursed Fables - A Gilded Rose from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99 or from Big Fish Games priced at £14.97.  The game requires a 2.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 787MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
