Focus ‘Teaching You’

Quite a proportion of what Focus republish are Education packages either with a large or small ‘e’ here I am looking at two packages that are unlikely to appear on most school timetables. The advantage here is that they are useful even long after school is past.

The 'Teaching You' series uses video and pictorial sequences along with other aids to show you 'how to'. Neither of these guides will ever make you an expert but they may just help you along the way. As with any 'Skill' the biggest input comes from yourself and that is simply hard word.

Golf Skills

This package claims to be as essential as a set of golf clubs, not sure I would agree with that but certainly seeing where you are going wrong is helpful in doing the thing right.

In terms of what you get there are 130 video clips to show how to do things correctly. Advice on equipment is important and perhaps somewhat less biased than the local 'pro' who will be promoting who knows what.

Basics such as grip, posture and setup are covered as well as alignment and swing using video, photo and the written word. If you are already playing then it can help with whatever part may be letting you down such as putting or bunker play.

Want help with the rules of the game or perhaps the etiquette this is also available along with a quiz that includes both static and video questions. Lots more on this CD about Handicaps - and how to keep one - as well as personal fitness.

Music Theory

This is something that can be taught, unfortunately - like languages - it is perhaps best taught when we are young. However unless you are either the child of a musician or someone who is very dedicated it is likely that other pastimes will be more in vogue. In latter life you wish you had learnt, now however you have the inclination you never had, but the brain is less willing to accept input.

This is stated to be ideal for GCSE Music students, it covers material up to Grade 5.

There are a total of 35 lessons, the whole CD has a total of 15 video clips and more than 700 music clips. As with most learning there are 'tests' and Music Theory is no exception here - they say - to test your progress.

Music Theory may not be as much fun as playing for you, but it's a lot more fun for anyone else around - at least - until you become proficient at playing. The beauty of this sort of package is that you progress at your own pace and with the case of the more mature student this could easily be over an extended period.

Learning to read and write music is perhaps more something an adult might want to do and unless really dedicated something a child needs to be pushed to do. Both these packages are available for £9.99 each or even less.
