Acer XC-885 Desktop

A rare find these days a Desktop offering, rather than a Laptop/Tablet/Notebook. This is a very small offering the dimensions are below and it comes with a Wireless keyboard and mouse set so nothing apart from the panel needs to be on your desk.

The Acer XC-885 desktop computer measures only 10cm wide, 29cm tall and 32cm from back to front but add another 4cm for cables etc. so 36cm deep.

On the back it has two HDMI connectors and a VGA. There are 4xUSB and below that 2xUSB3 and Ethernet. The standard three 3.5mm audio connections and there is still room for two internal blanking plates.

The front has on/off button at the top and working down an SD Card reader, two always on ports USB ‘C’ and USB and finally 3.5mm sockets for audio out and microphone connections. The blanking plate for a CD/DVD drive remains but it is not supplied.

It has an Intel Core i5 processor running at 2.9GHz. There is 8GB of RAM with 7.84GB available. The Hard Drive is 1TB it is split into ‘C’ and ‘D’ with 423GB free on ‘C’ and 465GB free on ‘D’, so plenty of storage.

It comes with Windows 10 Home and after a couple of updates I was completely up to date with v1909.

While few worry about the look of a desktop machine this was smooth and stylish and might even pass the ‘other half’ test in the lounge but if not it could still reside behind the sofa.

The wireless keyboard and mouse set was easy to setup just remove the tiny transmitter from the back of the mouse and place in one of the USB ports. Both the mouse and keyboard are immediately recognised. This means you can work from a reasonable distance from whatever panel you are using. A flat surface lets you trawl the Internet or YouTube from your sofa.

It was happy when I flipped between three open applications and if you do need a CD/DVD drive then I connected a USB one and it worked fine.

I was working with this in one room and my own work machine was in another I was sad to say I was far happier beside this unit than my own, possibly because the Wi-Fi speed was far faster than on my own older machine although it was only a few feet further away from the router.

The other more logical reason is that the processor on this was far more powerful.

Being an older person I still use CD/DVD and if this had one internally then it would be perfect.

I liked this unit and was more than a little sad the day I boxed it up to return it. Currys PC World are stocking the Acer XC-885 for £549 and Amazon seem to have the same unit for £449 including free delivery.
