HP PSC 1510

Image of author
This is a multi function unit often called an ‘All In One’ as it prints, copies and scans. Over the recent months I have reviewed different models from the same range the HP 1410 and 1610 so now the 1510.
HP PSC 1510

It is 38x28x14cm and the front folds down as the tray for paper store and paper output adding another 17cm to the 28cm depth. It looks rather like a 'fat' scanner but it is also a copier and is either a four or six ink printer.

Firstly a 'first' for me the claimed draft mode is 'up to 20PPM' and I achieved it, I normally bemoan that inkjet printers never get near the claimed speed but printing the nonsensical 200 word document and disregarding the first and last page I got 20PPM, I was so shocked I repeated the test and got the same result. Printing real documents (1500 words spread over 4 pages) produced a quite acceptable 12PPM. Unlike some other inkjet manufacturers the HP draft mode is clear and sharp and black text is black and not grey.

By default this is a four ink printer tri colour and black but should you use it to print a lot of images the black can be replaced by another tri colour cartridge of different shades to give six inks. Swooping cartridges is quick and easy by just opening the drop down front and the inks automatically go to the right side of the unit for ease of removal and replacement.

As a copier this unit can be used even if the PC is not connected, in fact when I first got it I had some items to be copied and I had not even installed the software on the PC and just copied both black and colour using the eight buttons on the left side of the top of the unit. Simple and straightforward, some reduction and enlargement are even possible as well as straight copying, however should you want to do fancy work it is easier from within Windows using the supplied software.

Scanning works well and while you do not get - nor should you expect - the range of facilities of a stand alone scanner and the software for normal 'occasional' pages this is perfectly adequate.

This unit can also print direct from a digital camera using 'PictBridge' and a USB lead  Attach the lead, switch on the camera, select the images and print. I was pleasantly surprised that when I selected 'A4' as the paper size I automatically got borderless, again this was using the camera and the printer with no PC involvement.

You can of course use the excellent HP software bundled with the HP PSC 1510 and should you want to print multiple images or manipulate images, let the PC and the HP software do the work and see the results on screen especially if you are using Photo Paper to print onto. I printed excellent borderless 'A4' images in 3minutes and 20seconds, both rapid and good quality.

This is a very nice easy to use multi function unit, I tend to print more than copy or scan but do a fair amount of all, the main advantage of any multi function unit is space saving and for the size of a 'fat' scanner you get all three. I was pleasantly surprised to get the claimed print speed - well done HP - and should you print in normal mode you will find it very quite. The stated price from the link below is £85. Doing my normal internet search found it at £81.50 from www.dabs.co.uk inc P&P.

Disconnect the usb cable, turn on the device, let it print the allignement page, place it on the scanner glass and press the scan button. Turn it off. Then you can turn it on & connect the usb cable again. adrian

Yeah, generally I agree with your review. I like the machine, but it has its own stubborn will. At present, every time I fire it up it prints a test page. Since I'm in the middle of trying to print up to a hundred Christmas Card envelopes I'm getting tired of the amount of paper and envelopes it's wrecking. I can't print 8in by 5.5in envelopes and HP tell me that that is part of the machine. 53 minutes with an Asian help-line found that if you call them 'DL' it'll print them. These stupid traits tend to detract from an otherwise versatile machine. I came across your review while looking for HP's Tech Line, whose address I've forgotten, to see if this test-print reaction is amongst the FAQs. Regards, Richard Blennerhassett.
