Gaslamp Cases 14

When Holmes and Watson are unavailable to investigate mysteries, the people of Victorian England could always call on the detective skills of Morgan and Jack to uncover the truth of matters.

The latest such incident, forming part of the Gaslamp Cases series, attracting the attention of Morgan and Jack is entitled "The Visitor of Wraithmoor Field".   On hearing about tales of claw marks, vanishing police officers and local people walking about with blank eyes, Morgan and Jack. along with their constant companion Evelyn, set out to investigate the farming village of Wraithmoor and this Match 3 game starts to reveal details of the mystery.

Consisting of over 70 levels of match 3 game play, the game spreads its content over five chapters.  Each chapter, which needs to be completed in sequence, features four upgrades that help drive the story along.  These upgrades need to be financed with Stars earned from completing the various Match 3 levels and, like the chapters, need to be completed in sequence.  Following the activation of each upgrade, you will be presented with a static cut-scene featuring printed dialogue that you can either sit through or skip for a quick return to Match 3 action.

This Gaslamp title follows the usual pattern and layout of e-Funsoft's Match 3 game play.  A centrally positioned grid, featuring a variety of tiles, will be sandwiched between supplied power-ups on the left and the current challenge, consisting of the number and type of tiles to be removed on the right.  Generally tiles will be removed by swapping two adjacent tiles to form a group of three or more tiles.  The group then disappears and the space created will be filled by other tiles falling downwards.  If during this process a group of more than four tiles is created then you will receive a reward of a bomb which can be used to clear awkward areas of tiles.

While most tiles can be removed as part of a group, there is one type of tile than cannot form part of a group.  This tile is referred to as a Crystal.  To remove this tile, which will form part of the Challenge, you will need to create a pathway beneath it so that it falls to the base of the grid.  It can then be removed.

On odd occasions the grid may reach a state where there are no possible available moves.  When this occurs the game will automatically shuffle the tiles so that you can continue.  With this particular title, the shuffle action occurred four times in quick succession at one point.  Fortunately this not spoil my enjoyment of the game.

You can download "Gaslamp Cases 14 - The Visitor of Wraithmoor Field" from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £5.04.  The game requires a 1.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 111MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
