Pure Elan Connect+

This is a small stereo unit that can run on mains or batteries. It is not only a DAB and FM radio but also an Internet radio and Bluetooth set of speakers. So what has Pure the biggest name in DAB radios got to offer for those who want the option of using their unit both in home/office and outside?

The Pure Elan Connect+ measures 23x10.5x5.5cm and weights 768 grams with batteries inserted.

I found that you get between 7 and 8 hours on a set of four ‘AA’ batteries between charges.

It is supplied with a USB to micro USB lead of one metre that then is the distance it can be from a computer or USB plug front.

There is an eight piece 50cm long rod aerial that extends from the top. Connections on the back are the holder for four ‘AA’ batteries (not supplied) the micro USB lead and a 3.5mm lead meaning that old MP3 player can also get an outing.

The controls are on the face in the central 7cm area which has the pair of stereo speakers either side to cover the front of the unit. There is a 5x3.5cm display in the centre of the face with a line of four buttons above and two columns of three either side of a large multi-function knob below the display.

The display shows which service is currently in use the time and if batteries are inserted or not on the top line. The 2.5cm central area shows which station is currently tuned as well as some subsidiary information, then at the base of the display a number of icons including if speakers are muted, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Initial tuning will probably require the 31x29.5cm four column double sided Quick Start Guide as while the line of four buttons above the display clearly are for Presets the two columns of three either side of the large multi-function knob are less intuitive initially.

Extend the rod aerial to scan for DAB radio stations. Tuning for FM is explained in the Quick Start Guide. Internet Radio first requires you to link your Wi-Fi. Linking Bluetooth requires your phone to discover the Elan Connect+ and finally plug in any 3.5mm lead for MP3 players etc. To swap between DAB/FM/Internet/Bluetooth is a sequential choice on the centre button in the left column and the multi-function control, harder to put in words than to do.

The two 2.5inch three watt speakers give a good clear sound with plenty of volume available from the multi-function knob.

There are twenty Presets available for each of DAB, FM and Internet Radio. While scrolling down an alphabetical list of DAB stations is not hard, remembering the frequencies of FM stations is harder and searching the thousands of Internet stations is not quick so Presets are very useful, remember your first and second choices are only a single push away.

There are eight EQ settings easily available suited to the main Genres of music. You can also use it as an alarm clock.

Having a small portable unit for all the listed sources in one is a plus.

At the time of publication the Pure Elan Connect+ is available from Amazon for £89.99 in either cream of dark charcoal. Full information and specifications for this product can be found on the Pure web site.
