SoundBlaster Play 4

The SoundBlaster Play 4 is a DAC, a plug in device to USB or USB ā€˜Cā€™ that improves the sound quality of music and indeed of the spoken voice be in from a phone call or any other source. As a plus it can also improve your voice be it a phone call or any other connection with other people. In the simplest of terms a DAC is a Digital (to) Analogue Converter.

The SoundBlaster Play 4 measures 5x1.5x.8cm and has a 3.5mm headphone or earbud connection at one end and the other end has a hard wired 8cm lead ending in a USB ‘C’ plug, an adapter for USB ‘C’ to USB is included in the box, this would add 2.5cm to the length.

A lot of Notebooks and most Tablets compromise audio; I have even seen a Tablet without a 3.5mm socket. So a DAC gives you that audio choice and not just for your favorite sounds as it works great for those video calls. A lot of the problems are caused by tiny speakers often stuffed into the base of the unit so the sound goes into the desk or your lap.

Decent earbuds or headphones help but only to a certain extent. Background noise on a video call is a pain and if that call is an important meeting….

The SoundBlaster Play 4 can automatically mute you when you stop speaking and unmute you when you start again, it can also clean up the sound from the other end so you hear what is said clearer this is called NoiseClean – samples are on the Creative link at the end – so a crisp clean call even if you or the caller – or both - are in noisy environments. There is also a manual mute button on the DAC.

Having a small light unit that easily fits in a pocket or bag is great and it even works with the majority of recent SmartPhones.

So now for the relaxation part better audio for your ears means you arrive at work or home more relaxed and the SoundBlaster even has EQ offerings to get best for speech, audio and even movies.

Also for when it’s required there is Bass Boost available. The DAC supports up to 110dB in stereo.

So even a bulk standard set of earbuds can sound better, not just Zoom, Meet Now and all other calls cans sound better but with a decent microphone in the DAC even your own voice sounds better to other people on a standard phone call.

A lot of the small recent Tablets do not even have a full size USB port so this coming native with USB ‘C’ solves that problem.

While I have only tried it on PC, Notebook, Tablet and Android phones, I see from the specifications that other things like Nintendo Switch and PS4/PS5 are also supported.

Better sound for both work and play is available with this DAC.

At the time of publication the SoundBlaster Play 4 is available from Amazon for £27.99.
