A lot of software is sold as a subscription some stop working once the subscription ends other will continue to work with limited functionality which in the case of security software probably means you will soon find you have problems with viruses and other nasty results. So one thing you always keep right up to date should be security software.

I am old enough to remember when you purchased a floppy disc and then later a CD-ROM but as threats became more immediate these needed to be updated and so what you buy now is a download link and these are updated every time you go online as the threats are not just updated monthly weekly or daily but all the time.

Most will have protection for their PC’s but today the threats exist for anything that connects remotely so when you buy a solution from McAfee that protects your PC or MAC it can also protect your mobile device to give you Total Protection.

For those that need or want it McAfee also have a product that protects your VPN (Virtual Private Network).

The download and install to my PC took around 20 minutes and when I checked after installation there was around 2GB less hard disc space.

While McAfee Total Protection works from the moment you boot up till the time you shut down in the background there is both a Desktop icon and program group created. The main problem people used to complain about was that software of this sort slowed your PC down especially while doing scans.

Of course these days Total Protection is far more than Anti-Virus and should you feel something is not right you can still do either a Quick Scan which just checks vital areas or a Full Scan but anything either from a CD or Memory Stick will be checked before installation and the same is true for downloads.

How many passwords do you have, even someone who just does emails, web browsing and word processing probably has at least a dozen, now some sites require a password so it’s probably many more.

The easy ones to remember are also the easy ones to crack some require both upper and lower case even numbers and special characters so McAfee will remember them all for you.

By default the front screen shows what is being protected, Real Time Scanning, Firewall, Automatic Updates and Scheduled Scans. I see from looking at this that shortly after boot up I have 84 Apps web connections and background processes.

So from the Home screen you can check all this and more, you can also let it stop spam but this is not turned on by default as most sites use cookies and these are often regarded as spam and if you do not accept these sites cookies then you cannot go there. Finally My Info tells you how many days protection you have left and should you still have concerns you can contact McAfee and chat them through.

McAfee Total Protection is available from the Amazon for £9.99 to cover up to three devices.

Details of all McAfee products are available on their website.
