The Crimson Portrait

Paintings are meant to be enjoyed and admired but in this case a painting arrives which can destroy the viewer.

There is a popular saying stating that a picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to the description.  However in this particular case a more appropriate saying would be that a picture could be worth a thousand crimes.  The picture in question is a recent addition to the Ravenholland Grand Art Gallery which forms the focal point of the title Gaslamp Cases 13.

With the subtitle of The Crimson Portrait, this particular work of art quickly developed a reputation of causing death or other disasters to whoever admire the displayed image of the painting.  With the number of reported instances, this was obviously the type of case to set before the Victorian  detectives duo of Morgan and Hack to investigate and solve.  With your assistance, provided by the completion of numerous Match 3 levels, maybe the dynamic duo could solve the mystery of he portrait's terrifying power inflicted on its admirers.

As usual this e-Funsoft title allows you to adjust the game's various audio volume levels plus opt for a tutorial to be included in its feature as the game is tackled in either Relaxed or Timed mode.  The 70 levels forming the Match 3 actions in this game will be divided into five chapters with each chapter contain four upgrades which need to be activated in sequence.  The Match 3 level grids will be centrally positioned and sandwiched between available power-ups on the left and the details of the current's challenge on the right.  The challenge will consist of the number and type of tiles to be remove.

The usual methods of removing tiles are supported.  By swapping two adjacent tiles you can create a group of similar tiles which are then removed with the space formed being filled by other tiles falling downwards.  In some cases this replacement could cause a cascading effect to remove more tiles.  You also have the power-ups which can be used to help the clearance rate.  Additional power-ups, in the form of bombs, can be produced by creating groups with more than four tiles.

While most tiles can be removed by the previously mentioned method, there is one type of tile that requires another method of removal.  This tile is classified as an artefact and has the ability to glow.  To remove an artefact you will need to clear a pathway beneath it so that its falls to the base of the grid and can be collected.  If an artefact features in a grid then it will also be included as part of the challenge.

Each completed grid challenge will bring the reward of a number of Stars.  These Stars can be built up and used to instigate the upgrades required for each chapter.  After an upgrade has been carried out, there will be a static cut-scene that appears with printed dialogue to move the story line along and report on any clues and information gathered by Morgan and Jack.

You can download this latest entry in the long-running series of Gaslamp Cases from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99 or from Big Fish Cases where it is priced at £7.34.  The game requires a 1.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 114MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
