Emporia Touch Smart

This phone looks like a normal Android Smart Phone but also offers help like extra volume, brighter contrast and larger text all things that help when our bodies start to say that is too hard and best of all a easy to use User Manual that explains everything, perhaps better still all of it is in a single language.

There is a second twelve page guide to WhatsApp something all the kids know about, those in their early working life use all the time, and most retirees shy away from, this can get you into the 2020’s.

The phone is 11x5.5x1.8cm when closed, when open it is 21cm, it weighs 111grams. The viewable screen is 7x4cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial screen measurement of 3.2inches.

For me anyway this phone can do most things that a ‘normal’ smartphone can do but with the advantage of more volume and brighter colours. It has touch so you have the choice of using the cursor keys or touching the screen, the one thing you do not have is an onscreen keyboard so answering long emails can still be a testing process.

Going around the outside has a torch button on the right side; the base has micro USB and a microphone. The left side has volume + and – as well as a 3.5mm socket for headphones. The top is clear as the flip open would cover any socket or button there, this leaves the back that has camera, torch and help button in a line.

When closed the front of the unit can still show things like time and date as well as battery state etc, open it and that blanks and the screen springs to life. When open the lower part of the screen has a total of nineteen large buttons no more than three across and the ubiquitous five position joystick control.

Like all Emporia phones this has a button on the back – here it looks like a finger print reader – to cycle through up to five contact numbers which if you live alone could be vital if you fall and are unable to get up again. However this can be covered if you wish by a second phone back included.

In the box are a set of earbuds, a micro USB to USB lead, a charge dock as well as the manual and the WhatsApp Guide.

Yes you can browse the Internet either using your Wi-Fi or mobile data, it remembers recent sites so not always necessary to type long URL.

For someone slowing their life down this could be all you need.

The Emporia Touch Smart is available from Amazon for £118.19.
