Acer Chromebook Plus

A Chromebook is an alternative to a Windows PC if all you use it for is emails, scouring the web and suchlike. These days a Chromebook has anti virus built in so you are already saving money and you should be safe to trawl the net, but as always remember if the offer looks to too good to be true it almost certainly is and you will probably get bugs that you do not want.

The Acer 515 Plus Chromebook measures 36x23.5x1.5cm. Going around the outside it has USB 'C', HDMI and USB on the left. The front is clear, the right side has 3.5mm audio socket, USB 'C' and Kensington lock port. The back is also clear as the screen goes back to 190 degrees. The back has four 3x.5cm small rubber feet in each corner the two at the front vertical and the two at the back horizontal. The weight of the unit is 1.37 kilos which is a tiny amount over three pounds.

Open the lid and once you have set it up it automaticity starts and a few seconds later it wants your six digit pin.

The viewable screen is 34x19.4cm, the notional diagonal imperial screen measurement is 15.6 inches. The display 1920x1080. Mounted in the centre of the area above the screen is a web cam.

There is a 74 key keyboard, 3.5cm is clear behind the keyboard and there is 4cm clear either side of it, the units speakers are mounted in this area. There is 10cm clear in front of the keyboard with the 12.4x8cm trackpad mounted centrally in this space.

It comes with a dual core Intel i3 processor running at 3GHz. It has 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD for storage. It has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. Despite the setup options offering touch screen choices it does not have touch.

Most Chromebooks I have seen offer touch and I am surprised this does not. I liked the sound and having speakers face up is a plus over a lot of devices that have the speakers in the base facing down. The processor only being i3 may seem low but everything I asked it to do happened without delay.

Having access to the Android Play Store allows you to use everything that an Android phone can use.

The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is available from Currys £369 for those who dislike a trackpad I see the price includes a mouse.
