Jam Transit Lite

Having looked at a number of Jam Speakers in the past, it was time to try out a headset from the company.

The Jam Transit Lite is a pair of Bluetooth wireless headphones.  As part of the HoMedics Jam series of products, the Jam Transit Lite belongs to the On-the-Ear style of headphones.  Predominately black in colour, with a mixture of matte for the headband element and lacquered surrounds for the earpieces, this headset is supplied with a micro-to-standard USB lead for charging purposes and an audio lead with 3.5mm jack plugs for connecting to audio devices that do not support Bluetooth or when battery power is not available for wireless connectivity.

Weighing 149g, the Transit Lite forgoes any soft padding on its headband.  Instead you have to make do with a covering of compressed rubber over most of the 28cm length of the headband.  You can extend the headband by as much as 3cm at each end for a more comfortable fit on the ears.

The earpieces are rigid with no means of adjustment for a more comfortable fit.  They are padded to a degree with polyurethane cushion material.  The usual “L” and “R” indicators are to be found, appropriately positioned, on the insides of the headband just above the relevant earpieces to ensure the headphones are worn the correct way round.

Situated on the bottom of the left earpiece is a socket for connecting the headphone set to a non-Bluetooth supporting audio supplying device.  Occupying a similar position on the right earpiece is a micro USB port for when you need to charge the unit’s internal Lithium-Ion battery.  The outer face of the right earpiece holds the soft touch controls for increasing / decreasing the volume level plus cycling backwards and forwards through tracks when connected via Bluetooth.

A lengthy depress of approximately six seconds on the power control will be required to activate the Bluetooth pairing process.  This should be generally quick and trouble-free if my experience is anything to go by.  You get a range of up to 10 metres of range between the headset and its source of the incoming audio.

When the Transit Lite headphones are paired to a smartphone then they can be used to receive incoming phone calls.  You can use the control panel on the right earpiece, but with a slightly longer depress, to accept / reject and carry out phone conversations.  Any music being playing when the call is received will be put on hold for the duration of the call.  This music will be automatically restarted on the conclusion of the call.

The headphones internal battery is rated at proving up to 11 hours of playback time.  However I found that the lack of headband soft padding and the inability to adjust the angle at which the earpieces sit meant that these headphones were too uncomfortable for any lengthy periods of use.  It was rare that I could manage to wear these headphones for even 30 minutes at a time.  Even then I would attempt to readjust the positioning of them on more than one occasion in order to ease any discomfort I might be feeling.

The Jam Transit Lite headphones were a disappointment and lack the quality I have come to expect from other Jam devices.  They certainly lack the comfort of similar headphone products that I have checked out in the past and have used on a regular basis.  Supplied with a one year warranty covering parts and labour, the Jam Transit Lite headphones are currently listed at £30 directly from Amazon.
