MyZone MZ-3 Belt

A visit to the Wearable Technology Show had me feeling less fit and able than normal. This device was one of the worst offenders simply because the people wearing them were the exact opposite of me in three ways, young, fit and healthy.

The chest belt is the hardware but more important is the software that knows what you have achieved previously and indeed how hard you are working. So in theory even an old decrepit specimen like me could become less decrepit assuming the effort did not bring on a fatal heart attack.

I looked onto their stand just before a presentation was due the amount of energy being spilled onto those machines made me feel ill, looking at the people on them make me feel older and more feeble as although they were working hard no one had the decency even to sweat.

As I moved to one side to exit the stand I was approached by a man from the stand – at least he was not in Lycra – and he thrust the box in my direction. I assume he thought if it did not kill me it might help.

So what is in the box, a belt not to worn on the waist but on the chest. The ones I have used in the past had a single task to measure heart rate and dependant on what the signal is sent to calculate certain parameters.

As regular readers will know I wear a device on my wrist with LEDs that constantly measures my pulse and with the effort of say walking up a hill carrying a couple of bags of shopping goes wild as I hit 150 beats a minute. The people on the stand who were exercising would possibly reach that on a rowing machine after a long workout. They are fit and I have a rapid pulse that cannot be treated as I have other medical problems.

The box contains a red expandable 3cm wide belt that I was surprised could reach round me. The important bit is an oval 7cm wide lozenge that has a couple of poppers on the back to attach it to the belt.

There is a short 20cm long USB lead that ends in a popper to charge the oval lozenge.

The inside of the box has two QR codes one for iOS and the other for Android. Download the appropriate App to your SmartPhone and that’s about it.

Once you have registered your device and attached the belt to your chest you are ready to start becoming fitter but be warned this device knows you and anyone thinking of having a lazy day should think again.

You need your SmartPhone to be within Bluetooth range and be prepared to suffer. You work through different colour zones and you have a percentage figure, more details – along with a lot of fit looking people - on the second link.

The Myzone MZ-3 is available from the first link below for $149.99.
