Who Framed Monty?

Always keen to help, a friendly fox finds itself solving a crime that he is supposed to have committed.

About three years ago I came across Montgomery Fox.  This is a gaming character rather than an occasional visitor to my back garden in search of available food scraps.  Developed by Paprikan, Monty started his gaming career with the Case of the Diamond Necklace before tackling the Case of the Missing Ballerinas.  Now our pesky friend is back for a third adventure as he takes the lead in the Revenge of Victor Draven.

A comic book style opening introduces you to the next crime and investigation as you assist Montgomery in his work.  A valuable painting has been stolen from the local museum.  Luckily the actual theft was capture on the museum's surveillance system and this revealed the identity of the thief.  Unfortunately the actual thief appears to be Montgomery.  As a result you will not only need to find the stolen art but also clear Montgomery's name and work out how he was framed for the crime he did not commit.

The game spreads itself over 20 different locations set out on a map of the area.  While these locations need to be visited in a set order, you do have the ability to select either Standard or Challenge mode for each one.  Standard mode has no time limitation and come with an occasional special item plus a rechargeable Hint feature.  With Challenge mode you can earn stars for beating the time limit, find frequent special items, search for two items at a time and take advantage of the benefit of a Hint feature.

The visit to each location on the map will follow a similar pattern.  Running across the bottom of the depicted scene will be a panel displaying the tasks that need to be completed.  The panel will display two or three required items, depending upon the choice of difficulty mode, plus a chosen Collectible item and part of a magnifying glass which has been separated into the lens, metal frame and handle.

When displaying the required items, the game uses a variety of formats.  While text is often used, sometimes the letters could be jumbled up or the word appearing backwards.  Occasionally you might need to find an item from its silhouette or cycle through four separate items to find one that might be in the scene.  You also need to be aware that some items could be found in an area hidden behind an outbreak of sparkles.

Automatic notes and a report on findings will be created. This information can be accessed from the game's map feature along with the available locations.  You can read through these notes whenever you please.  Interspersed between the "visit and search" action is a range of ten mini game puzzles.  These interludes, delivered in a fixed order, are made up of various tasks that include finding matching pairs of images, spotting the difference between scenes, arrange coins in order depending on size plus swapping and swivelling elements of a scene.  You also might need to play catch a thief game and complete a jigsaw.

Having completed the 20 different locations, you are then required to visit each one for a second and even third time to collect a slightly different set of items.  A similar approach is used with the mini games as you work your way through them, hopefully solving the crime and clearing Montgomery.

This game can be downloaded from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99 or Big Fish Games priced at £7.85.  System requirements for the game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 22048MB of RAM and 342MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
