Poker via Dream Toys

Not exactly what you would call a toy but it was on show on the Flair stand at Dream Toys 2005, so something for the much bigger boys – and girls – World Poker Tour, the Tournament Set and just for good measure their Professional Card Shuffler.

No one - I hope - is suggesting that you need more than a pack of cards or so to play poker. However whenever the word 'money' is mentioned things tend to get a little serious. So if you and your mates enjoy a game then why not have all the accoutrements of the professionals and the Tournament Set distributed by Flair has all that.

It all comes in an metal case there are 300 real (11.5gram) clay chips (just like those used in casinos) in three colours. 125 Blue and White, 100 Red and White and 75 Black and White. All the chips and clearly marked WPT (World Poker Tour). You of course are free to decide what amount each chip represents.

Also in the case are two packs of  WPT cards, a set of five dice and a laminated card giving the hand rankings as well as the rules for one of the poker variants Texas Hold'em, of course you are free to play any of the other types of poker. It would have been nice if the set had included rules for a number of the more popular poker variants.

The case itself is quite impressive at 41x22x7.5cm, it is lockable and one supposes also fireproof though I did not test this out. I must admit the price scares me a bit but branded products always carry a premium.

The same range also includes a two sided table top (not looked at). Also something that will stop the eternal cries of 'what are you doing to the cards' a Professional Card Shuffler.

This unit is designed to shuffle one of two decks of cards, it is powered by 'C' cell batteries - not provided - but if you look closely on the box this is stated.

The shuffler is 20.5x11.5x9cm. Half the cards are placed face down on a shelf on one side of the unit and the rest on the other sides shelf. A button is pressed and machine does it's work. For the really suspicious you could all have a turn at using it. The shuffled cards are delivered onto a Perspex tray in the base of the unit.

The whole kit is a gadget and while I doubt any real professional would use one it certainly can stop arguments amongst people of mixed abilities. Even when you are playing cards for only pence people really get involved and this grey plastic and Perspex unit could well stop some disputes.

As far as the whole perspective of 'World Poker Tour' it is rather like any brand and some people will want only branded goods - or so I am sure the people involved will hope - and these items make it possible.

I am not sure how well these branded products will be distributed in shops. The press release mentions three internet sites www.boysstuff.co.uk www.firebox.com www.drinkstuff.com it also mentions www.amazon.co.uk and the Flair phone number for stockists 0208 643 0320.

I checked all the sites and www.amazon.co.uk are currently the cheapest at £103.99 for the Tournament Set including free delivery and £10.39 for the Card Shuffler.
