Zhiyun Crane M2 S Combo Camera Gimbal

Up till now all the camera gimbals I have looked at were designed for SmartPhones either for direct use or in one case to control a second phone remotely in the gimbal. Here a much larger and more robust offering that can be used with DSLR offerings and most likely by semiprofessionals looking to produce output for others to see and use.

The whole unit arrived in a padded carrying case and weighted a not insubstantial 1.6 kilos.

While it can still handle a SmartPhone this is really designed for far weightier items such as DSLR cameras.

The full title of the product is ‘ZHIYUN Crane M2S Combo [Official] 3-Axis Handheld Stabilizer, Gimbal Stabilizer for Mirrorless Camera, Gopro, Smartphone with Cell Phone Clamp, Bag.’ A not insubstantial title but when you break it down it is an accurate description.

The round grip sits nicely in my adult hand with the thumb able to wrap round to complete the circle. It is 16cm from base to the top where the camera grip is and the fitment is 15cm across at the point where you insert your SmartPhone or DSLR camera. This control unit – without camera - weighs 543 grams.

A USB to USB ‘C’ cable is supplied to charge the units internal battery.

There is a small screen just above the clever joystick type control button on the padded control arm 9cm from the base. The movements are easy to make but enough pressure is required to avoid unwanted movements.

A small 3cm tall tripod is supplied that raises the unit 3cm from whatever you sit it upon for those placing it remotely and operating it from their phones.

The case is designed for the unit and the front unzips to lay flat at 90 degrees to allow easy extraction of the accessories, the tripod and indeed the unit from the heavily padded interior.

A small 10x10cm 124 page fourteen language Quick Start Guide is provided and eight pages are in English.

The Guide explains four different balance methods for your DSLR, Horizontal, Vertical, Roll and Pan Axis. It then goes on to describe the eight buttons on the trigger control all easily accessible from a normal grip position. Everything else you will have to pick up from the ZY Play App which you can download from the iOS or Android store.

While I do have a DSLR camera I rarely use it these days but for those who do the Crane M2 S will make taking images and videos a lot easier especially for those who need to get into unnatural positions as you can place it an then move away to capture that image or video without having to contort your body.

It can also be used with a SmartPhone should you so wish but there are several smaller and lighter units available if that is what you use your Gimbal with.

At the time of publication the Crane M2 S is available from the link below for just £259.
