Verbatim External SSD 512GB

A lot of rather nice Tablets and Laptops come with only a 256GB SSD drive and once a few larger programs and Apps are loaded you start to see a smaller than 50% of free space load a few videos and things start to become critical. So this offering of an external SSD unit of 512GB – or even 1TB – is a very nice option to have.

This fingerprint secured external SSD from Verbatim provides 512GB of storage, measures 11x4x1.2cm and it comes with a 60cm USB lead. The lead plugs in to the top end of the SSD drive .5cm from the top of the unit is the 2.5x1.6cm finger print reader.

On first plug in you will find you have an optical drive – even if your computer does not have one – and these files are on the SSD and they are permanent, you then run the software using the already created password which you need to change to something of your choice. Next you enroll a finger or thumb print on the reader you watch it grow as you follow the instructions about doing it several times. You then assign this a name.

If others will have access to the SSD they then enter their finger or thumb print on the reader and they assign their finger print a name, this can be on a different day or week it does not need to be immediate but to do this at a later time the new master password will need to be entered.

That is basically it, if the drive is to be used on another computer then you almost start at point one with the optical drive on first run and then an external drive normally one drive letter later has all the files on.

Just remember which digit of which hand you used and as soon as you plug it in to a USB drive you see LED’s on the drive flash blue and red, touch your digit on the reader and it becomes green and blue and all your saved files are available immediately and you are able to add more.

If you need to leave your desk just touch the card reader again and all the files are locked immediately. I tested this playing some music from the unit and within a couple of seconds the music stops and you get a message saying that drive is unavailable.

If someone tries to access files in this state they can enter the master password if they do not know it they can try to delete the password but that will cause all data on the drive to be deleted and you are warned, so do not forget the master password. Of course you and anyone else can still access the data by inputting their finger print but not after the password is changed. This process can only be done by the administrator the first enrolled person.

At the time of publication the Verbatim Executive Fingerprint Secure SSD with 512GB is available from Amazon £112.83

Amazon also have the 1TB version available for £172.88
