1TB External SSD Drive Envoy Pro FX

OWC are a company that produce internal and external solid state drives, enclosures and cables for both PC and MAC users. The unit I am looking at is a 1TB external SSD drive usable on PC or MAC. They also do a similar model – Envoy Pro SX - that is Thunderbolt only so as far as I know that makes it almost a MAC only unit as currently although a USB ‘C’ cable will fit it the power is not there to format it.

This 1TB SD drive from OWL measures 11.2x7x1.4cm and weighs 231grams. It is very solidly built, it comes with an OWC format utility that will create a single Windows readable drive and give that drive the next available drive letter.

Once formatted – a far faster one than if Windows does it – you have from this 1TB unit 893GB of free space available.

It also comes with a copy of Acronis to keep your data and files safe this can be installed at the same time or later if required but don’t lose the serial number in the box.

On a computer that has only USB2 drives I copied 14,000 files a total of over 80GB of data from the internal drive to the external Envoy Pro in 57 minutes which equated to around 25MB/sec. The same files now on the notebook and back to the Envoy Pro took 9 mins the same transfer, this would be even faster if you were using Thunderbolt, this is a Thunderbolt 3 device.

The beauty of the Envoy Pro is that it is both USB ‘C’ and USB as the connection at the drive is USB ‘C’ and the cable supplied is both USB ‘C’ and USB as there is a tethered USB ‘C’ to USB adapter on the lead. So my original transfer from an older PC without USB ‘C’ uses the adapter and the second transfer from a more modern notebook uses the native USB ‘C’ cable. Transferring the same files from the Envoy Pro to a USB3 drive on a notebook took 16 mins.

The cable is 60cm long.

The case itself is very robust and while SSD drives when they first came out were not, in a proper housing like the Envoy Pro they can now withstand more rugger treatment.

This is a reasonably priced solid unit with USB3 you get a good transfer rate. They also do ½TB and 2TB versions at roughly half and twice the price of my reviewed unit.

The OWC Envoy Pro FX 1TB is available from the link below for £255.12 for debit card purchases.
