New Design for Eco Tank Printer

Epson continues to develop and improve its range of Eco Tank devices included its ET-2750 model.

With its “ET” prefix indicating that this next product belongs to the EcoTank family of offerings, Epson has launched the ET-2750.  Suitable for Home and Home/Office use, the ET-2750 offers print, copy and scan All-in-One capabilities plus double-sided printing and wireless connectivity for good measure.

For the benefit of those not familiar with the Epson EcoTank system, this is a sea-change that Epson introduced with some printers in 2015.  The EcoTank printer would use ink supplied from ink purchased in bottles rather than the more traditional method of cartridges.  Included in this change of ink feeding, Epson increased the capacity from the 3 ml found in a cartridge, up to 70ml found in each ink bottle.  Buying ink by the bottle significantly dramatically reduces the overall running cost of the printer.

With this latest range of products, the EcoTank models, including the reviewed ET-2750 have undergone changes to the design of the box and the transfer of ink from the bottles to the tank.  Whereas previously the ink tank, used by the printer, looked like an afterthought as it jutted out from the side of the printer in a rather ugly fashion, Epson has integrated the ink tank into the main body of the printer.  The result gives a very similar appearance to that seen when ink cartridges were in use.  You now have more smooth lines and a more compact shape.

While the previous method of transferring ink from the bottles to the tank was fairly straightforward, accidents could occur as a pair of my jeans, decorated with red spots, will testify.  Now the new bottle design and the appropriate slot in the tank feature a docking mechanism to ensure a set fit.  There is also no need to squeeze the bottle to facilitate the transfer of the ink to the black, cyan, magenta and yellow sections of the tank.  Included in the package are two bottles of black pigment ink and three bottles covering cyan, magenta and tallow dye ink.  This should be enough to print 14,000 pages in black and 5,200 pages in colour.

The new design concept now gives the user a predominate black rectangular box with dimensions of 370 x 345 x 240 mm (W x D x H).  The standard arrangement is adhered to with an A4 flatbed scanner mounted on top of the inkjet printer that is supported by a paper output tray.  Paper is fed from the rear of the printer.  A memory card slot is located on the left front of the unit while see-through panels on the opposite side provide a guide line as to the currently capacity of each ink tank.

An adjustable panel on the front of the ET-2750 can be set at the best angle to suit the user’s view when access the unit’s various features.  This control panel is based around an LCD screen displaying menu options and status messages.  Positioned to the right of the screen is a navigation cross plus buttons to display possible solutions, stop/start operations, apply functions and return to the previous screen.  On the left of the screen are the Home and power buttons.

Setting up the ET-2750 and the accompanying software is straightforward although a little patience is required as the initialisation on the unit can take up 10 minutes with a progress bar providing feedback.  The supplied CD-ROM will lead you through the progress as you follow the on-screen prompts.  My only criticism of the process involved the entry of the wireless LAN password which required scrolling backwards and forwards through the alphabet to select the necessary letters.

The print driver supplied with the printer offers a range of features including those to print in qualities designated as Draft, Standard and High.  Testing these three print qualities, when producing monochrome and colour documents, produced the speeds listed in the table below.

Epson ET-2750 Timings
QualityMonochromeColour
Draft 39ppm 15ppm
Standard 23ppm 7.5ppm
High 5.5ppm 2.5ppm

Both documents contained a similar amount of words with the colour version featuring a small colour image.  Draft quality should be reserved for editing purposes while Standard would be fine for general work.  High quality could be used for documents requiring laser quality images.

As the ET-2750 supports automatic double-sided printed, I tested this feature with a ten-page document (4970 words).  This document took 103 seconds to complete the printing on five sheets of A4 paper using the Standard print setting.  Using the scanner in photocopy mode produced an A4 colour document in 12 seconds.

The ET-2750 is capable of producing photo prints with options for print size and paper type.  For this task I used the Epson Easy Photo Print software which comes as part of the standard package.  Printing full colour on glossy paper took 2 minutes 7 seconds (10 x 15), 3 minutes 58 seconds (13 x 18) and 7 minutes 26 seconds (A4).  All the images were of a reasonable standard.

Due to the EcoTank technology, these particular devices have been priced at a higher rate than the more traditional ink cartridge models.  The ET-2750 is listed at £349.99.  Fortunately running costs are such that they bring considerable saving.  The supplied ink bottles should keep you going for around three years.  Replaceable ink bottles are available for £7.99 for cyan, magenta and yellow plus £13.49 for black.

18 Months after purchase and I also got the mysterious "paper jam" but no paper issue. Took it to an Epson certified servicer and they said it's the motherboard. Aaaaand I'm just out of warranty. Save your cash.

just had this printer for eighteen months and having problems from the start.
first problem came at the beginning of February, when the printer started reporting either non-existent 'paper jam' or 'no paper loaded' - there was paper loaded!
contacted Epson warranty, to take advantage of the free three year warranty extension, only to find that Epson failed to record my application and has refused to honour the agreement.
still having the same problems - save your cash!
