Delivering a Blue Storm

After a number of in-ear products, this next listening device is of the over-the-ear offering.

Developed by Sandberg, the Blue Storm is a wireless headset which forms part of the company’s Esports Equipment range of products.  Arriving with a five year warranty, this product consists of the Blue Storm headset, a 16cm audio cable for use when the music is supplied from a non-Bluetooth source, a 54cm micro-to-standard USB lead and a small, brief Quick Guide booklet which relies more on illustrations than text.

Decked out in a striking combination of lacquered black with bright blue highlights, the Blue Storm headset is of the over-the-ear type of personal listening device.  In its initial state, the lacquered black headband measures 27cm.  If necessary you can increase this length by as much as 2.5cm at each end.  Securely fastened to the underside of the headband is an 18cm strip of blue hard rubber which acts as a head cushion.  I found this element could struggle a little to fulfil its designated duty when the headset is being worn for extended listening sessions.

While in their pristine state, the two, well-padded earcups have an attractive appearance with their lacquered black coating and strip lighting feature.  However the build up of finger smears, through everyday usage, does its best to mar this aspect as the earcups quickly lost some of the initial gloss.  Accompanied by a blue Sandberg logo, each earcup features a boomerang shaped strip which, when this feature is activated by the press of a button, emits a blue glow ensuring you can easily be found in a darkened room when enjoying the audio delivered by this headset.  If you wish to remain anonymous then you do not turn on the light feature.

The right earcup contains a number of other features.  There is a micro USB port for charging the Blue Storm headset using the supplied lead and a 3.5mm jack socket.  The jack socket can be used, with the supplied lace-style lead, to connect to a music source that does not support Bluetooth or as a means of receiving music from your smartphone when the headset has run out of battery power needed for Bluetooth communication.

Also located on the right earcup is the headset’s control panel.  Buttons are provided to adjust the volume levels up and down plus cycle in either direction through the available tracks.  In addition there is a button to pair/pause/play/call and another button to turn on/off the light feature mentioned earlier.  While not actually part of the control panel, the right earcup also houses the headset’s built-in microphone feature.

Although Sandberg does not provide a means of transporting this headset as part of the product, the company has considered the possibility of this action being required at various times.  Both earcups are attached in such as way to the headband that they can be folded inwards so reducing the space required by the headset during transit.

Driving the Blue Storm’s Bluetooth facility, and incidentally the light strip feature, is a rechargeable 380 mAh Li-polymer battery.  Arriving partially charged, it took approximately an hour connected to the mains to full charge the device, this battery is rated at giving up to 10 hours of playback time from a single charge.  Running a continuous stream of music, via Bluetooth but with the strip lighting turned off, I was able to get over 15 hours of playback time.  I must admit that while the Bluetooth streaming was continuous, my ears where giving a number of rest periods by removing the headset from my head.

I was more than happy with the quality delivered by the headset’s 40mm driver unit.  There was a clear separation of the appropriate stereo channels while the clarity of the delivered signal was of a high standard.  I did find that using the right earcup controls was a little on the fiddly side but other than this I have no real complaints regarding the headset’s performance.  This product is currently available priced at £32.99.  For an even more bargain offering, Amazon has this headset listed at £26.66.  Even at the higher price, this product is well worth considering.
