Canon Small DSLR with 18-55mm Lens EOS1200D

This DSLR is only a little larger than their most powerful PowerShot unit. It is a full featured DSLR capable of capturing very good images and for those that require it also capable of capturing very good video images as well.

The Canon EOS 1200D Digital SLR Camera measures 12.5x9.5x14cm and weights 684grams without the neck strap.

While you would probably attach the neck strap for those occasions when you are wandering around for hours taking images I preferred it without it when I was removing it from my bag to take images and then moving on.

The hand grip on the right side is comfortable and although the scales do not lie it feels comfortable when being held.

The left side has a rubberised door behind which are connections to charge the solid battery, and extract data via USB or HDMI, there is also a neck strap anchor point. The right side has the neck strap pair. The base has a tripod anchor point which should be used for distance shots unless your hold is extremely solid there is also the door that conceals the solid battery and any SD card you may use.

The front has the 18-55mm lens with auto focus and manual focus slider. The top has a build in flash in front of the viewfinder and the top of this protrusion has a shoe for those who prefer an external flash. To the right of this is a 13 position wheel and an on/off slider a manual flash button another adjustment and finally right at the front of the hand hold the shutter release. For those coming from a point and shoot environment this forward position will need some adjustment to get used to.

This leaves the back and another adjustment for the DSLR novice the 6x4.5cm display is only for review of images once captured before capture it displays other information. To the right of the viewfinder is a fop to the digital camera user with an instant video capture button. On the extreme right edge two buttons used for display of images on the TFT. Beside the TFT are five well marked buttons as well as the ubiquitous five position joystick to help you through the many menus.

Can a novice pick up this unit and take reasonable images, yes if they follow the getting started instructions. Should everyone read the manual, certainly and once you have some knowledge swap the ‘Auto’ setting button and start to improve.

So in the space remaining some of its features an 18MP CMOS, excellent low light shooting for those occasions when flash is not allowed, on camera guide for those learning, easy application of a ‘look’ while in the basic arena. For those needing more than a single shot but not wanting video 3FPS continuous is available.

This is a nice ‘easy to learn’ DSLR unit and still small enough to carry around without the need for visits to the gym.

The Canon EOS 1200D with 18-55mm lens is available from the first link below for £287.81 with free delivery.
