Adidas RPD-01

Last October I had the chance to try some headphones from Adidas, yes like you I thought they only did trainers, here I get the chance to try another of their products, this time a set of earbuds, these are Bluetooth and link easily to whatever your Bluetooth SmartPhone.

The earpieces are attached to a thicker shaped piece that sits around the back of the neck each earpiece and lead is around 30cm so would lie on your chest. The shaped and stiffened middle bit sits comfortably around the back of your neck with the last six centimetres each side at 1cm wide and just over half that thick, three buttons on one arm along with the USB ‘C’ connector to charge its solid battery and one button on the other arm.

The back of the buds are magnetic so will click together to form a neckless when not in your ears so even if running very little chance of it coming off.

A set of wings and tips are fitted to the headset when you open the package but unlike most that just put other sizes in a small plastic bag here the others are all laid out in size order attached to the base of the box. There is also a short USB to USB ‘C’ lead to charge the unit.

As with almost everything these days there is a thick multi language booklet ‘Legal and Safety’ and a thinner multi language Quick Start Guide with a guide to what the buttons do and the English explanation on the opposite page other languages follow a flip though shows 35 different ones.

Changing the tips and wings is a twist fit action that is simple and easy to do.

Unless you have 20:20 vision you will probably need glasses to read the half page of text in English to find out what the buttons on the unit do.

The side with three buttons has the middle button to turn on/off and pair, the buttons either side increase of decrease volume. The middle button is also play/pause and double or triple press of this button goes back or forward a track.

This one – overworked button – is also the answer or reject phone call button.

On the side of this arm is also an LED beside the USB ‘C’ port.

As with most recent headsets be they buds or headphones has a downloadable App and this allows you to set ‘Customisable Action Button’ which is the only button on the other arm of the unit.

While you control everything apart from volume by the middle button there are so many controls on it that it’s a degree course to learn multiple presses or length of press that otherwise simple actions can become complex.

Sound quality was reasonable to good but if out in noisy conditions volume had to be high to continue to listen.

I often get things in proportion by a journey on the Northern Line of the tube, at the current time this was not possible but my guess it would not reduce external noise to an acceptable level.

They play for around ten hours between charges and are IPX4 sweat and water resistant certified so ideal for those exercising.

At the time of publication the Adidas RPD-01 is available from Amazon for £79.99 including free delivery.
