A Haunting Novel - Burton Hotel is a Hidden Object Adventure game from the Elephant Game's catalogue.  This title, available as a Collector's Edition version, casts you in the role of Harry Burton who, on the death of his father, had just inherited the Burton Hotel.

Although the building had been his family home prior to his father converting it to its present state as a hotel, Harry had little love for the residence.  It had been the place from which his younger brother had mysteriously disappeared some ten years earlier.  Later it was the place where his mother died after never accepting the disappearance of her youngest son.

Harry's plan for the building was to check out the condition of the hotel before putting it up for sale.  However the appearance of a ghostly figure, reminding Harry of his mother, during his initial inspection caused a change of Harry's plan.  As a result Harry sent for help from an old acquaintance of his father.  The old friend was David Blackthorn who claimed that Ghosts were his speciality and, as a result, he was ideally equipped to assist Harry sort out any issues with uninvited quests and the appearance of ghosts.

Concentrating its action on the various rooms making up the hotel, the game provides you with the usual assortment of tools and features.  Running across the bottom of screens will be links to access a Map feature, Task, Inventory, Strategy Guide and a Hint feature in the form of a mirror.  The mouse pointer will change shape when over an area that make contain a possible action.  You also get some assistance from David Blackthorn who suggests when you need to make an amulet to defeat spirits occupying the building.

As you are led on a merry chase between the hotel's different rooms and corridors, while tasks are completed, you will need to solve various mini game puzzles, Hidden Object challenges and gather together the ingredients required to fight off evil spirits.  During the search of the hotel, you will learn that your brother, Peter, had been enticed to enter a magic mirror to play with another boy, called Ben, who had been trapped inside the mirror earlier when being punished for bad behaviour in school.

Having managed to defeat the evil spirits and destroying the magic mirror in order to rescue Peter and Ben, the curse will be lifted from the Burton Hotel.  You can then gain access to the components making up the Collector's Edition section of the title.  These elements will include replaying mini game puzzles, Hidden Object scenes and embarking on an Expedition, view a Secret Room and tackle a bonus chapter.
