Emporia Smart 5

Image of author
This is both a ‘normal’ SmartPhone and also one with added help for those with hearing and or sight impairments as well as those of us where age has caught up with us. Externally this looks like a perfectly normally recent SmartPhone but Emporia have been producing offerings for those with such problems for longer than even DORO.

It is 14.8x7.3x.8cm and weighs 177grams. The viewable screen is 12.5x6.2cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial measurement of 5½ inches. Once you power on having inserted your SIM you see a normal Home screen with all the normal icons and indeed if you do not feel you need the added assistance you can continue without any, when you do, just press the Emporia icon and answer three quick questions and sit back with the extra help it gives.

The Home screen now has a screen image of your choice in the top half that is overlaid with a digital clock with day and date to its right. In the centre of top is a cog wheel that gives you instant access to Torch, Alarm, Silent Mode, Wi-Fi and more. The lower part of the screen has two lines of two icons, Phone, Messages, Take Picture and Notifications. Flip left for a screen of contacts shown by name or image and the ability to make a voicemail and also the emergency button. Scan right twice to get a screen with eight icons, Camera, Alarm, Calendar, Weather, Play Store, Internet, Email and All Apps. This last icon then shows a vertical column of all your Apps in alphabetical order.

Now to something most of us can learn from – in the privacy of our own home – the 156 page 20x13.5cm well laid out Training Book, this not only shows basics but also things you may not have used simply because you did not understand. There are still thousands who do not understand Apps, how do get them and how to utilize them.

There is also another smaller book 72 page book 13x10cm that explains the SmartPhone itself and what the buttons do including how to insert a SIM card, yes there are still older people who have finished their working life and have never used a mobile phone.

Technology is not something to be scared of if you understand the basics and these two books explain it all even the bits you were afraid to ask. Then setting up the emergency section on your phone could even save your life.

Going around the SmartPhone has the volume up and down buttons on the right and below this the on/off, the base has speaker, USB ‘C’ connection and microphone. The left side is clear, the top has 3.5mm socket for earbuds. At the base of the screen are three buttons, All which allows you to close any or all open Windows and Apps, Home that always returns you to the Home Screen and Back.

On the Back top centre .5cm down is a square slightly raised area with three cameras and LED flash, below this a finger print reader.

Finally the onscreen keyboard is that little bit larger and clearer so writing that message or note is easier.

Now what else is supplied in the box, a dock for easy charging, a USB to USB ‘C’ lead, a set of earbuds and a USB plug front to 13amp plug. Finally there is a generic case that totally encases the phone and not just the back and sides.

So the Emporia Smart 5 covers all the bases and in your own time you can learn to use and get the best from it so you then stay in control for longer much longer.

The cameras take OK images and it comes with Android 10.
