Gigabyte P34

Not that long ago a 14inch notebook would be unlikely to display 1920x1080 this unit is IPS QHD (3K) which shows 2560x1440 and its quite useable. So what other features does this Intel i7 offering with Windows 10 have to offer.

The Gigabyte P34W measures 34x23.5x1.5cm and weighs just under 1.8kilos.

This is a mixture of conventional and the latest, a Kensington Lock Port, Ethernet, VGA, USB3 (with charging when off), USB 3.1 and 3.5mm socket for headphone/microphone are the left side. The front has a line of five LED’s. The right side has USB3, SD Slot, USB3, HDMI and DC input. The rear is clear as the lid comes down to 135 degrees.

The viewable screen is 31x17.5cm which gives a diagonal imperial measurement of very close to 14inches and as stated the viewable screen is 2560x1440. The screen itself is not very reflective – this is a quick marker of quality – as reflective screens are cheaper to manufacture. The screen surround is matt black so again will show few fingermarks.

The speakers are quite good and are behind the keyboard with the ‘on’ button being between the speakers. The 81 keys of the keyboard are mostly full size. There is a strip 3cm wide either side of the keyboard with an area 9cm wide clear in front of the keyboard. The 10x5cm trackpad is mounted 10.5cm from the left and 13.5cm from the right.

While it comes with two DVDs there is no optical drive supplied so you will either need to connect a USB one or copy the files to a memory stick or SD card.

Boot up is a rather good 10 seconds and shutdown 5 seconds. In heavy use I got close to three hours before it screamed loudly for the power lead.

It has a 128GB SSD as ‘C’ and a 1TB conventional drive as ‘D’.

It’s always difficult to determine what extra software is installed as it comes direct from the last reviewer who puts a lot of test software on. So apart from Windows 10 and some Gigabyte and Intel Apps I claim nothing else.

In use it stated everything rapidly and I tested the latest version of CorelDRAW on it and was very happy with its response. This of course is helped by the 16GB of RAM, the i7 processor as well as the SSD drive.

Designed primarily for Gamers I used some of the games that were on their (provided by the last user) and got myself shot up and mangled rather quickly.

When I came to reset the unit before passing it on I found the reason why all the earlier users’ files were in place the recovery partition had not been setup so I was only able to remove the files I had added.

I liked the backlit keyboard which is very useful when used in less than perfect light.
