Philips 27inch Panel 272E1GAJ

This is a 27inch flat panel 1920x1080 that shows everything just that little bit larger, it also has something that most other flat panels do not have a decent set of speakers so external speakers should not be required, so what else does this recent offering from Philips have to tempt you.

It is 61x36x1cm apart from the base of the screen surround that is 3.5cm and immediately you know why the sound is so good as the speakers are down facing in the base. The surround on the sides and top are .5cm with the base surround being 2.4cm and so the notional diagonal imperial measurement is as stated above, the full 27inches.

It has an 18x22cm stand that raises the unit by 8cm from your desk, it has a good amount of back tilt and amazingly almost as much forward tilt, there is no side to side movement.

The connections on the back are the mains input from power brick on one side of the support arm and HDMI and Display Port on the other.

There are five push buttons under the right edge of the front screen surround that adjust the on screen settings and one tiny LED on the right to tell you when power is going to the unit.

On investigating the settings my first surprise is that the volume lever was only set at 80% as sound levels were higher than most dedicated external speakers. Of the other controls there was also plenty of brightness, contrast and sharpness in hand also.

There are no less than seven extra picture colour modes for those who have special requirements, I was happy with the default when viewing web pages, using word processing, viewing emails, streaming movies, Zoom meetings and even for video conferencing which is more or less all my normal uses.

This has a fast 144Hz 1ms refresh rate so ideal for those who are into gaming. The energy rating is ‘A’.

While I have already mentioned it the speakers in this unit are worth a second mention as the sound quality and volume amount are both excellent for both speech and music.

They also do a similar model at 24inches that would also be an excellent all round unit as the extra thickness in the bezel means that a pair of decent speakers can be used as opposed to the tiny ineffective units often forced onto manufacturers by lack of space.

The Philips 27inch PHL272E1GAJ is available for £199.97 from the link below.
