With a retro look to its environment, this next title challenges you to finish adding answers to incomplete crosswords.

You may remember an earlier Oleg Segeda offering that dealt with Nonogram mosaic creating game play within an retro environment. Now Oleg has directed his individual look at game play with this next effort.  This time the retro look is retained and then applied to elements of Hangman and certain Crossword features that have been integrated into a grid structure.  Entitled "Paint By Words", this puzzle based offering challenges the player to complete a series of unfinished linked Crosswords by making use of a collection of available letters within a pixel-based environment.

The game is built around eight shapes in silhouette format that will eventually need to be converted into coloured images.  Each shape will consist of several groups of pixels which can be tackled individually.  These groups. as with the main silhouettes, can be tackled in any order or sequence.  While some groups will be clear of any additional embellishments indications the theme relating to the type of content, many groups will have no such indication.  As a result some group's content of words could related to any subject matter and cover general topics.

When a group is selected, you will be presented with a partially completed Crossword with some words missing letters.  With words containing missing letters, you will need to add an appropriate choice from the list of available letters supplied by the software and arranged across the base of the puzzle. Incorrectly placed letters will be rejected and you will need to return them to the list.  A Hint option is available and this will replace a missing letter in its correct position.  You just need to be aware that this product makes use of American spelling rather than the correct UK version for words in the Crosswords.

While hardly a visual treat, I found the game had some appeal.  It was a useful training device  before moving on to the more traditional Crossword tasks.  You can download "Paint By Words" from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £5.27.  The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 36.5MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
