Hidden Legacy - Dark Heirloom is a Hidden Object Adventure game from the Domini Games stable of titles. I have been looking at the Collector's edition version of the game which, rather surprisingly and unlike other Domini titles I have looked at, does not offer a Strategy Guide facility. However you do get the usual selection of extras that are generally found in titles of this type.
With a choice of playing the game in Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom difficulty, you are cast in the role of Gabriel Vanyard who is a Relic Specialist Researcher that has a pet parrot as a companion. The game starts as you are asked to investigate the death of Cassius Montgomery and see what you could find about a deadly curse that was related to a sinister heirloom ring belonging to the family.
The game provides a number of tools and features to assist you in your investigation. Arranged across the bottom of the various locations you need to visit are easily accessible tools. A Journal records your notes and tasks while a map feature can be used to transport yourself to different locations. An Inventory will show the objects collected and will mark those that can be examined with a plus sign. Options to move back a scene and provide a hint of the next move in order to complete a task are also available for use.
Access is provided on either side of the screen provide details regarding the number of Collectibles found and Decisions made at vital points during the game. Additional assistance will be delivered by the mouse pointer which will change shape when it is in the vicinity of places where different actions can be performed.
Your investigation will lead you through a series of tasks that will start based in London as you examine the Montgomery museum. Trips to Ireland and Canada will follow as other members of the Montgomery fall victim to the Curse of the family heirloom ring and die, At one stage you find yourself being the prime suspect in a case of murder and even consider the possibility of being involved in grave robbery tasks.
Mixed in with the various investigation tasks will be mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play. Outnumbering the Hidden Object challenges by more than three-to-one, the mini game puzzles will offer the player a choice of Easy or Hard version. While some of the mini game puzzles presented in the game were of a familiar type, there were several puzzle offerings that I had not encountered before and certainly welcomed the challenge. As usual the Hidden Object scenes made use of different methods of indicating the items to find. You will also have the option to switch to Match 3 game play if you prefer.
Once you have managed to defeat the Curse of the Heirloom ring, you can dip into the various Collector's Edition features which include authorising a portrait of Anna Montgomery as part of a bonus chapter. You can download Hidden Legacy - Dark Heirloom from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. The game is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £11.93. The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 856MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
