Writer's Block is an affliction that can appear at the most inappropriate times and can affect both aspiring and well-established authors as they struggle with their current output. Elephant Games has taken this type of situation as the focal point of its "Halloween Stories - Inspiration's Spark" Hidden Object Adventure offering. In this game, which is available in Collector's Edition format featuring various extras, casts you in the role of Professor Alan A Newman.
As a presumed expert in dealing with various problems, you agree to put your skills to work to help a struggling author deal with the condition of Writer's Block. The author currently suffering from this block is none other than the world famous author Edgar Allan Poe.. This world famous author is currently struggling to write one last story in his normal style of featuring terrifying action that would appeal to his fan base.
As befits the author's reputation in producing stories of the more macabre type theme, your meetings with Edgar Allan Poe will be conducted in a grave yard. The author will be bound in chains to reflect his status of being bound by his condition of being in a Writer's Block state. In will be up to you to release the author from the chains that bind him as Poe places himself in the position of accepting all the suggestions you make regarding the way his forthcoming last novel will take.
Needing to spark your own inspiration for coming up will ideas to pass on to Poe, you dip into some of his earlier work by checking through his novels for the vital spark that will appeal to the author. As you hunt for the spark of inspiration you will need to fulfil a variety of tasks as you move between a variety of locations. Along with a number of encounters with Poe, you could find yourself facing Death, Inquisitors, a Madman and a French soldier who needs to be rescued from expert torturers.
Among the novels you will trawl in looking for inspiration will be The Pit and the Pendulum. While this novel might not provide all the answers, you could find yourself collecting ingredients to mix potions as you deal with problems arising from the Hidden Object scenes and mini game puzzles that block progress.
Eventually you will provide Poe with enough inspiration to embark on his final project and compose his last novel. Not surprisingly this novel would be based on his favourite topic of death. Maybe more of a surprise will be the identity of whose death will provide the central theme but I will leave you to discover the identity of Poe's chosen victim.
Having completed the main game, you can then tackle the bonus items included as part of the Collector's Edition format. These items include a bonus chapter, Expedition, Secret Room, Wallpaper and the opportunity to replay the mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play.
