When I first encountered “Antiques Hunt – Tales of Cobblestone Streets”, I expected to be reminded of the Cobblestone Streets of my early Northern upbringing. However that was not the case. This title, from GameOn Production was set in the more countryside area of France covering Saint-Elme, Valdorme and Florran. Given the choice of playing the game in English, French or German, you will be cast in the role of the new owner of a local Antiques Shop that you have inherited following the recent death of your uncle.
While acting as the owner of this establishment, and possible expert in the matter of antiques, you quickly find that you are also at the “beck-and-call” of any local resident who has come across a problem. You will be expected to drop everything and provide the local resident with a required service. At least your actions and response to the call for assistance will bring in a suitable fee and increase the popularity of your business.
The tasks that you will be required to provide are varied in type and usually give you the opportunity to repeat them as necessary. Each completed task will bring a suitable financial reward and you will be able to repeat incomplete tasks almost immediately. As your bank balance increases, so will the shop's fame and your own popularity, with residents of other nearby areas who may want to take advantage of your services.
Among the types of services you can offer to customers will be that of a Curiosity Hunt. This task will follow the standard Hidden Object procedure as you will need to search a scene to find a list of items accompanying the scene. The list could involve single words or an occasional riddle or description. To assist your search you will have access to Zoom and Hint facilities. Sometimes a time limit feature will be included to increase the challenge.
Other types of services could include putting together the pieces of a torn picture. One piece of the picture will be fixed in position to help you get started. I did encounter one slight problem when a piece was overlaid by a partly completed picture and I was unable to access it. Also involving tasks dealing with scenes are Spotting the Difference puzzles between two scenes and rearranging a scene broken up into triangular sections. This latter task does not provide a Hint feature. You could also be required to fund pairs of items or an item from a category found in a cluttered heap.
This title is available in Collector’s Edition format. Several bonus items will become available to enhance the challenge of the main game. These bonus levels include more puzzles, wallpaper scenes and the opportunity to replay the game’s background music.
You can download “Antiques Hunt – Tales of Cobblestone Streets” from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. The game requires a 1.0 GHz processor with 1924MB of RAM and 1.02GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
