Grim Tales - Light in the Darkness is a Hidden Object Adventure game. Developed by Elephant Games, this title is available in Collector Edition format with a number of bonus items to supplement the main game. Some of the bonus items will be available immediately while others will require some progress to have been made before access is granted to them.
The main game casts you in the role as the companion of Richard Gray who is a master of the Dark Arts. This ability has always ruled his life and have resulted in situations during his life when he has become unhappy with the results he achieved. As a result of the effects that his past actions have caused, Richard Gray has decided it is time to separate his soul from his body and move on to the afterlife.
But the taking of this decision was just the start of matters. In order to comply with the rules of Dark Arts, Richard must undergo a series of test before he could move on to the afterlife. According to the Rune of Events these trials, involving Richard reliving past major events of his life would need to be corrected. During the various exercises he would need to attempt to put right his past mistakes. The results would then be judged under the auspices of the Guide of Souls.
Assisting Richard in these trials will be an array of tools arranged across the base of the different locations that will need to be visited during the repeat of events. Set out from left to right will be tools designated to provide facilities for a Map, Task, Inventory, Strategy Guide and a rechargeable Hint facility. Using these tools, with some additional help from a mouse pointer, which changes shape to indicate when different actions are possible, you can revisit past events in Richard's life and make attempts to correct matters and change his personal history.
The creation of scenes from Richard's past life and his reliance on Dark Arts involves the use of a mixture of set tasks, mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play in the dealing of past events. During these sessions the flow of the story line had a distinct feeling of being very similar to that presented in the Crossroad series of titles reviewed in the past. This is hardly surprising as the developer of the Crossroads series and Light in the Darkness was, in both cases, Elephant Games. Personally I preferred the Crossroad series of titles.
Having guiding Richard through the various trials he needed to face to correct his past mistakes to achieve his transfer to the afterlife, you can dip into the different features of the product's Collector's Edition features. You can visit an Expedition or Secret Room while replaying puzzles that involve filling in forms, making use of a map and fitting irregular pieces into a shape or replay Hidden Object scenes with the required list of items is displayed in text format or as silhouettes with the scene being spread over a number of pages. There is also a jigsaw and bonus chapter to complete.
You can join Richard Gray as he seeks redemption by downloading Grim Tales - Light in the Darkness from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99 or from Big Fish Games priced at £15.28. The game requires a 2.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 745MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
