Remnants of the Past

How do you explain to the dead that they are no longer alive?

Using the same detective duo of Emily Rivers and Mark Sullivan as seen in the "Lost Mysteries", Domini Games has released "Remnants of the Past" in its Mind Echoes series.  As with the earlier title, "Remnants of the Past" is a Hidden Object Adventure game dealing with the appearance of ghostly figures at the death of a character.  In this case the occurrence happened following three mysteries deaths in the Legends of the Middle Ages Park.

Available in Collector's Edition format, this title features a range of bonus elements which can be tackled once the main action has been completed.  Among the bonus items are various Collectibles and the ability to retry mini game puzzles and Hidden Object challenges plus a bonus chapter to supplement the main game.

With the main game being played in a choice of Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom level difficulty, you are cast in the role of Emily Rivers who does all the work while Mark Sullivan directs your activities,  Assisting you in the various tasks that make up the game are the usual features and tools we have come used to seeing.  These specific tools are arranged across the base of scenes.

Included in this arrangement will be an EMF detector which will shimmer when it can be used to detect paranormal activity in the vicinity.  Other supplied tools will include a Journal, Map, Inventory and rechargeable Hint feature.  You will also be provided with access to examine progress with regards to Collectibles and Decisions made during the game.

As you explore different locations based in either the Real or Nether worlds, you will discover that the inhabitants of the latter, having died many years ago, will have failed to accept the fact.  This is not the case of the dead returning but more of the dead never leaving.  It will be up to you to solve the problem of what to do with them as you tackle multiple challenges.

These challenges could take the form of a mini game puzzle or Hidden Object type challenge.  As usual with Domini Games, Hidden Object scenes will be identified by an outbreak of sparkles and you will be given the option of sticking with Hidden Object game play or switching to a Match 3 challenge.  If you decided to stick with Hidden Object game play then you might be required to look for items displayed in text format as numbers, in silhouette format, parts, riddles or identifying the differences between two scenes.

Mini game puzzles, outnumbering Hidden Object scenes by at least three-to-one, give you a choice of either Easy or Hard format of the task which will vary in style.  some tasks could involve logic as you arrange items or perform specific tasks.  Among the puzzles are those that require you to put together a required object, move markers to their correct positions, line up gears, navigate a map and position postcards to display a skeleton.

In your role as Emily you will have to survive being accused of being a witch by a long-dead King as they drag you away for an execution.  You will also have to convince the dead that they are dead.  Hopefully you will manage to make it safely to the bonus chapter that forms part of the Collector's Edition.

You can download Mind Echoes - Remnants of the Past from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99.  It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £11.00.  The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 1.29GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
