According to the historians at Domini Games, the Detective Club was established on the 19th September in 1870. The founding members of the club were three young detectives named George, Emily and Thomas. You will need to join this club by taking on the role of George as he set out, along with Thomas, to search for Emily who has gone missing somewhere in the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London. Your temporary membership of the Detective Club will be granted as you enter the Domini Game offering of Missing in the Fog which is available in Collector’s Edition format.
The usual mixture of set-up options can be adjusted for this Domini Game title. You can set audio volume levels plus set the screen brightness and activate certain settings. When playing the game there is a choice of Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom difficulty mode.
Assisting you in your search for Emily will be various tools arranged across the bottom of the screen. These tools consist of a Journal with Notes and Tasks section, a Map indicating the current and unlocked positions plus where some items might be found, an Inventory, Strategy Guide and Hint feature. Occasionally a return to the previous scene will be made available. You also get fly-out to check on progress with Collectibles made up of Tinctures, Masks and Figurines plus the Decisions made during the game. These fly-outs are position on the left and right side of the screen.
The search for Emily takes George and Thomas to the local market where evidence begins to emerge regarding several murders including one dead body discovered by the Detective Club. It also appears that Emily’s disappearance is more to do with her conducting her own investigation rather than that of the Detective Club.
The game proceeds through a number of well-drawn scenes as the remaining club members work their way through a series of tasks. Good use is made of overlaid windows to highlight particular items and split screens when dialogue is involved. As usual you will also be faced by numerous Hidden Object scenes, indicated by an outbreak of sparkles, and mini game puzzles that tend to block progress.
When the task involves a mini game puzzle, you will be given the choice of tackling either an easy or hard version of the problem. This task could involve taking part in a knife fight between characters or make a plane from various parts. In other instances you might need to reposition items or spread your control over certain areas. Although not applicable to every tasks, some times the task will involve several stages.
When the task involves Hidden Object game play, you might be asked to look for items governed by price, search for items shown as words or presented in riddle format. Sometimes the task might involve looking for pairs of items or looking for images found in a story book plus searching for part of a scene. At any time you will be given the option to switch to Match 3 game play if that is your preference.
This game develops from searching for a missing girl to one involving solving the mystery of an accident regarding a ship. I can reveal that at one point a toy cat has a role to play in the game but I will leave you to discover what that was and what happened.
This game can be downloaded from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £14.79. The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 843MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
