Decorate a Tree

A mixture of Match 3 game play and puzzle solving can provide a test to display your ability at Christmas tree decoration.

The latest release from Ironcode Gaming is the company's festive seasons offering entitled Christmas Yarn 2.  This title takes the player on a journey spread over 100 levels of Match 3 game play.  These levels are mixed in with various mini game puzzles to help finance a decoration feature.

Christmas Yarn 2 provides the player with various choices regarding the gaming environment of a game that can be played in versions for English, French or German.  With this game you have a choice of Fast or High graphics display paired with either Casual or Expert levels of difficulty.  The game also offers a choice of playing in Relaxed mode or being restricted by a set number of moves or a time limit when completing the challenge set by each level.

Positioned centrally on the screen, each Match 3 grid, filled with a variety of tiles, comes with a specific challenge of the number and type of tiles that need to be removed from the level.  The challenge is displayed on top of the grid with power-up tools, representing Hint, Hammer and Shuffle, shown on the right.  These tools can be used multiple times once recharging has taken place after each use.

The game uses the standard Match 3 procedure of creating groups of three or more similar tiles by switching two adjacent tiles.  The created group then disappears and is replaced by more tiles falling downwards and, sometimes, creating a cascading effect.  Along with numerous Christmas theme tiles, you are likely to encounter a wide range of special tiles making up the grid's content.  Appearing, spread throughout the game, are over 30 different types of tiles with names such as Achilles Heel, Fire-breather, Dart Thrower, Chain Generator and Fire Source Spawner.  I will leave you to discover what exactly each of these tiles carries out when used to justify its name.

At the completion of each grid level, you will be awarded a certain amount of gold coins.  This financial resource can be used to help purchase various items to decorate a room with its centre-point of a Christmas tree.  Once purchased these items can be dragged into position using the mouse cursor to demonstrate your artistic creative ability.

From time-to-time you will be given a break from the diet of Match 3 action.  These breaks are made up of mini game puzzles that appear randomly.  These puzzles could require you to link pipes together to manage a flow, complete a jigsaw, match face down cards and slide pieces around to create a scene.

With some grids that I found particularly difficult to complete, Christmas Yarn 2 can be downloaded from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  The game requires a 1.6 GHz processor with 2048MB of RAM and 205MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
